Farmer Killed In Bushhog Rollover Accident

There was a tractor/motorcycle accident just west of me Saturday. Some dumasss on a motorcycle passed a whole string of cars and hit a tractor making a left turn. They flew the biker out in the Aeromed. Same name as the local banker. Age was pretty close to right too. Don't know it WAS him or not,but if it was and he survives,I'm gonna be REAL tempted to walk in and slap him right up side his head for being such a brain dead idiot!

I had some clown try to pass me (on a tractor) and the 6 cars following me yesterday. He was passing ON A HILL, ON DOUBLE YELLOW. Just as he was getting up along side of me, a state police cruiser topped the hill. They both locked up the brakes and came to a stop. One had his day ruined, the other might have made his quota for the day. I drove on home.

Some accidents aren't so much an accident as they are plain old stupidity. At any rate, I feel sorry for everyone effected. Even being stupid for a minute is no GOOD reason to pay with ones life.

I was hauling loads the other day, right south of Farm Tech Day in WI. Cars were passing me like it was Daytona, and then having to lock up the brakes for the car in front of them. Saw one that created a little smoke when they stopped. Ridiculous to say the least.

what neck of the woods you in rrlund?
i got a brain dead friend that rides and is a banker in Ohio...just checkin

A friend of my Dad's lost his father about 15 years ago due to an idiot trying to pass him and hitting him broadside as he made a left turn on his tractor. Saddly 15 years later some of the same kind of idiots are on the road as I had one pass me that way about two weeks ago. What's really bad is that the idiot had slowed down and had been behind me for about 200 yards so there's no way he didn't notice when I signaled my intention to turn. Still just as I cut the wheel he flew past almost hitting the front end of the tractor. I hope he had his window down cause I cussed him at the top of my lugs til he was out of site....

I think there are several problems at play here. One is that everyone thinks they are so important that they have to hurry up everywhere they go, then, to make matters worse, I don't think any of them were paying attention in drivers ED when they taught what hand signals meant...or do they even bother to teach that anymore?

Regardless I know there are alot of idiots out there either doing their best to either kill me or trying to do something stupid enough in front of a 30,000 plus truck that I kill them. Personally I don't want to hurt or kill anyone but given the choice between them and me, it dang sure ain't gonna be me......

don"t farm but lived my whole life in farm country ( boonies )
got no problem settlin in behind farm machinery & waitin it out, but see idiots every day that act like they are on the way to the hospital to do emerg surgery, not just here but in town also
the ones i like best are the ones that come screamin up behind you, but will NOT pass, just happy to settle in about 2 feet off your back bumper don"t matter if you speed up, or slow down they just gotta hang there
stoopid is stoopid, plain & simple
bob

I see a lot of idiot drivers car's and motorcycle's. I have a few motorcycles,(my 37 Indian Chief being one) and I get out on the road now and then. It'a almost not a pleasure to ride anymore, because of the crazy drivers. Stan

Oh. A product of Springfield Massachusetts. All this time I thought you had a Pontiac.
Yeah, there are different machines that mow ditches safely, but they cost more money..... misused bushhogs cost lives, yous pays yer money, yous takes yer choices...

couple weeks ago Denver co: cyclist killed after t-boned suv. watched re-run news clip, suv makes left handed turn after car passes[looks like car doing speed limit]from a car wash, crossing over 4-lane street, when a speeding [you could see he"s flying] 24 yr old crotch-rocket driver smoking tires trying to stop, t-boned drivers side of suv, killing cyclist, had he been doing speed limit, he could have slowed and swerved to miss suv turning. speeding down city streets, duh....

Where I live, you can add to the list of brain dead, diesel pickup divers. Once a year they have a diesel extragavanze at the fair grounds. Hundreds of underage kids arrested for drinking and drag racing their black smoking pickups all over town. It's a 3 day event with truck pulls and a dyno to put your truck on. Good time to leave town.

I have noticed this is more the case in areas where there is lots of traffic (say a lake area on a summer long weekend) and only 2 lanes. There is always some idiot who wants to pass a whole line up of cars. If he eventually does get around the line, all he will find is another line up not too far up the road. Some people just can't be at the back I guess, their need to be up front is more important than the many lives that could be taken by a head on collision on a busy highway.

I was hit in March of 94 on a John Deere 4440 by a loaded semi. Nothing attached to the JD meant it took the full force, & ripped apart the engine & transmission housings. He had a 1.5 mile straight visble unobstructed shot of the tractor, & claimed he never saw me till about 5 seconds before he hit me. I spent over an hour in the hospital having what was left of my rear window pulled out of my scalp!

If I had to bet. Odds are the bush hog was on an N series ford. No over running clutch and the tractor brakes condition was marginal at best. No rops and seat belt either.

Since the last thread about a death on a tractor we've probably killed about 5000 motorists on our highways. Funny how tractor accidents and plane crashes make such big headlines. Must be because they don't happen very often.

Buick&Deere your monomaniacal hatred for Ford Ns is showing again. I wonder how you can sleep at night worrying about those Ns.
To think you can guess the brand and model of the tractor based upon the type of accident is beyond ludicrous.
It's downright silly.

I am afraid to give hand signals because everyone just thinks I am motioning them by. I have had too many close calls, idiots passing just as I started to turn left after signaling. I just stop and wait until they either stop or pass me, then turn.

That is a nasty combo buickanddeere. Unfortunately there are many of those in all communities around the nation. Sad Ford designed them that way.

Actually, according to statistics we have access to at the fire house, the most LIKELY tractor to be killed on in a roll over is a narrow front FarmAll letter series, but since you tend to make up most of your facts as you go along, why not start a rumor that it was an N Ford?

[i:654c4848f0]I said the statistical likely hood is ..........[/i:654c4848f0]

I'm an objective man. Can you show me your statistics?
Not your usual hunches, hearsay or old wive's tales mind you. But real statistics.

How about you showing the stats a N series with a bush hog and no over running clutch or rops ISN'T a high risk combination.

After making a couple phone calls to friends in the immediate area. (one of which is a firefighter who responded to the initial call) I found out the cause of death was operator being ran over after he dismounted the tractor to move a tree limb. He had bypassed the key switch and had a spring loaded kill switch rigged in place. He apparently got off the tractor before it was completely shut down, and the engine never shut all the way off. When it re-fired, the tractor moved forward, running over the operator with the right rear wheel, then he was dragged under the still rotating bush hog, which caused massive trauma. The operators body was enough to bog down the tractor (which was running @ idle) killing the engine. A witness saw some of the event happening. There was no "roll over" involved. Neither friend could recall exactly what brand/model of tractor was involved, other than the fact it was GREEN......Hmmmm A green 8N?

Ya gotta wonder if ol B&D has developed an aquired taste for crow just yet.....He has so many opportunities to try it....

A guy can't enjoy much with out sleep. I'd say his fear and hatred of the N series has kept him up at night for years. :)

As for this story, there ain't many "farmers" left in that neighborhood that would be use'n a N to mow a ditch bank. Might be some guy with a 10 acre yard, but the farmers through there wouldn't be seen on a N do'n work.

A kill switch sounds like it something that works with a magneto. Otherwise battery drainage would be an issue.
Unless it was a diesel and the media story missed a few points?

If it was a Deere with a Mag which would work with a spring loaded kill switch. The tractor would have a pulley and the driver wouldn't be dismounting over the right/pulley side.

.....I don't see "green tractor" in the article......

Drop the shovel B&D!!

A man is dead in a tractor accident and it doesn't have anything to do with the make and model.

[u:fa4663053a][b:fa4663053a]DEAD!! [/b:fa4663053a][/u:fa4663053a]

Because he had a lapse in judgement, probably trying to save time doing something he did 100 times before.

We've all been there, we've all done it, we all drive different color/age tractors. His luck ran out and his family has a hole in their lives now.

Maybe they'll bury him in a green and yellow casket with the Deere Service # painted on the lid.... that might make you happy enough to walk away from [i:fa4663053a]in front of computer [/i:fa4663053a]and get some sun & fresh air.

Pretty much everybody on this forum is/has been involved in dangerous situations, from equipment to livestock. Most of us are lucky enough to have a few stories to tell that don't have death or dismemberment involved. Others are not so lucky.... it's part of the job, and it probably won't change.

I hope everybody that reads this thread takes it to heart and maybe rethinks their next step to stay safe. At the end of the day, your family is in the house waiting for you to come in for supper.... don't let them down.

Sorry for the rant everybody, our prayers are with the dead man and his family.

Tim is right guys. Don't matter where you are or if you only have show/parade tractor. You know someone who has been injured or killed working around equipment or machienery. Could be a industrial accident in a factory, or a guy just mowing his lawn. Or someone who lost life or limb in a motor vehicle accident.

Most of the accidents that happen are someone in a rush, no experance, cobbling repairs and so on. My nephew has survived 2 tractor roll overs. Both his fault when he was too young to be running a tractor without adult supervision. Both on paved roads! I knew an old guy, in his 80's who rolled an H on dry roads and died.

This isn't the time and place to be blaming a brand. It's a time to review what we are doing and making sure we do it right.
