water softeners??

hi-my water softener is acting up again. has anyone tried any salt-free alternatives or new products. iron is my biggest issue not calcium.
also have sulfur smell somedays. thanks

Iron contaminated water is a problem for all water softeners. They just aren't designed to handle it. What you really need is an iron filter. There are various types of these filters but all oxidize the iron in the water and then remove it with a filter that needs to be back washed periodically to get rid of the Iron which is really rust. It's a chemical process and I don't believe there is any other way to do it.

The softener doesn't care wether you use sodium chloride or potassium chloride as far as softening the water.

To get rid of the iron and sulfur smell you have to oxidize and filter it out. This happens before the water goes through the water softener.

My personal preference is to inject chlorine using a chemical feed pump and a cartridge type sediment filter with a cartridge that is designed to be rinsed out a couple time before you have to replace it.
