Blood loss between hay-field and barn

Anybody have a idea how to control deer flies in a shady lane through which I have to drive to and from the hay-field? They had been gone for many years but they're back now, with this wet spring. There is a creek in this area also. Thanks for any information. Fritz

I found a mesh camo jacket at Bass Pro that I use when I hunt woodchucks that is light, cool and seems to do a good job foiling hungry deer flies.

A recent set-up is gaining popularity with horse owners for biting flies: mount a good sized basin 3-4 ft above ground with some sheet metal around it - whole thing is painted black. Basin has a soap/water mixture. Biting flies attracted to dark horses more than light coloured horses. They investigate and get caught in the soup.
One of my horse customers picked one up 2 weeks back - says it works well, but you could fabricate one fairly easily too.

(quoted from post at 06:58:05 07/16/11) Interesting, can you post some pictures or name of the trap?

Yes please.............. I saw something like what you are talking about advertised but they wanted your first born and dibs on the second and third.....

i use a trolling deer fly trap. its a blue plastic anti freeze jug coated with sticky trap glue. gemplers sells the glue. coat the jug, put it on a stick and mount it above your head level. as long as the trap is moving, the deer flys attack it. i have two mounted on my golf cart an it is amazing how many flies you catch. the deer fly is an ambush predator. it attacks any moving object and tries to attack from above. they are especially attracted to the color blue. the bright blue disposable plastic cups also work good (keg party cups) farm and fleet sometimes carries the trap glue too.
