BAD MAGNETO

I have a Fairbanks magneto that gives no spark. I suspect the coil is bad. How do I test it?? With an ohmmeter? If so, what should the resistance be?

I'd look at the condensor and points first. Run some fine sandpaper through the points. Probably corroded.

Also lightly sand the condenser and any clamps that hold it in. Have fixed several just cleaning up these items.

It has been just long enough I am a little fuzzy but I put a coil in an M mag and I am thinking it tested between 4500 and 5000 ohms.

That is a little low for a battery ignition coil (closer to 10K) but the mags I have checked always seem to check lower in this range.

If it checked lower than this or way higher I would be suspicious. Infinity is obviously bad.
