i was in krogers last night got ready to check out and had to use the do it yourself lane they pay someone to stand there and show you how its done but wont open a register i complained but they said they could not do anything about it. i told them this is taking american jobs and they are supposed to be union so i left and was thinking about this so i pushed my cart all the way to the end of thier lot lets see thier automated system go fetch that.

Why didn't you push your buggy to the side and let their automated shelf stocker take care of it? I may one day have to use the self check but it'll be a lot colder day in July than it is now. :) TDF

I'll bet they're sorry they fooled with you. I'm almost afraid to look and see what their stock closed at today......btw, are you kin to anyone who posts on these forums under a few dozen different handles?

I don't mind the self checkout, especially when I've gone in for just a few things and don't want to stand in the one check out register that has a clerk when the other 9 are closed. :?

I like the self check out, because most of the time when I need some help there,I end up getting something for nothing. The last time it happened I tried to tell the clerk that I did not think it was right, but she told me that I did not understand the system,so I said OK.

I am long gone and out of the store while you guys are waiting in line for some entry level checker with no sense of urgency and an apathetic attitude to check you out. Krogers, Home Depot, Randall's + many others are all going automated here in Houston.

I have yet to have an automated checker make me wait or talk back.

thulow the point is they have eliminated american jobs i can already see that u=you are one of these people who have to argue with everyone and is right 100% of the time.

I assume you're not talking about the Kroger's Shoe Store where my wife once worked.

It's closed, too, though. The owner got drunk and passed out in a recliner with a lit cigarette. He burnt the house down and himself with it.

WalMart tried the self checkout here, with predictable results. All the bottom feeders thought they had died and gone to heaven- "one for you, one for me; one for you, two for me; Oh, what the he11, ALL for me." Stuff was walking out of there so fast it was just a blur. 2 weeks later, all the self checkouts were dead, and the live checkouts were only slightly more animated.

I like the self checkout at Home Depot- saves time. They have someone hanging around, ostensibly to "help" you, but actually to keep an eye on the shysters.

If you're going to a big box store, its because you want it cheap at a bargain. Don't blame them when they do what they have to, to make you happy.

The self check out idea is failing. Recently, a large west coast grocery firm (Albertson?) announced that it will remove all such equipment.

Krogers, the country's largest grocery chain is considering similar action but has not yet announced if and when.

Though I have tried the self check outs, I no longer use such as I find it takes longer if there is anything out of the ordinary, which is ordinary in my case.

I like the self checkout and prefer it most of the time. Grocery store, Home Despot, etc.
Can't always use it - not handy for sheetrock, 2X10s and the like. But if I'm just there to get some sandpaper, a can of paint, a tool or some hinges I will use it over a live cashier. Saves time I think. I also like to buy my gas at the pump - especially at places where you have to prepay.
Now if the cashier is blond and has, shall we say, some obvious talents then I prefer to go there.

I like using htem but am considering a lawsuit against Lowes, Krogers, and Home Despot because they only offer the system in two languages Spanish and English and not my native German. ACLU will likely assist me in my endeavor to take em down.

I refuse to use the self-checker ANYWHERE. Why should I use the self check-out when half the time it doesn't work right? And please tell me why I am going to help the store save money at the check-out, do they offer 5% off my grocery order for DIY? Nope, you won't see me taking jobs away from other citizens just to save a few minutes. BTW the chain stores here are beginning to phase out the self-checkers in response to consumer demands.

My sister in law is h3ll bent on using those. We bought beer one time and used one. Took forever to get somebody to come over and check the I.D. of 3 old farts. Would have taken about a tenth the time to go through the lane with a person.

I've seen them but wonder who I'm supposed to hand my check to after I write it, so, I just go to the checkout that has the best looking woman working the register. Sometimes that doesn't work out either, so I just hand my check to whoever is working the register.

Got to say I agree with all that don't use the self checkouts. My biggest problem is that they ar putting people out of work and increasing profits. The way I see it is if I'm going to do the work myself then why not give me another 1 or 2% discount over what the store card already gets you. Heck, by having their 'VIP' card your saving them millions already on research and advertising, etc so why would I want to give them anymore when they aren't giving me anymore?

On top of that the few times I've been coerced into using them I've had nothing but problems. It's funny when the person watching over them says do it here and I'll help and then they have problems too....If the place wanted to make good use of their employees they'd let them open a register and handle alot customers instead standing there watching the people waiting in the other lines.......Just my .02

I bet you're just as steamed at all the buggy whip factories and whale oil dealers that eliminated American jobs too. I don't like them because you can't shut off the voice telling you what to do, it's worse than a wife.

next time you go shopping, get a lot items in buggy, when you get to checkout stand, start speaking German, and see if any one speaks it, when they try to tell you they don't understand, raise hell with a higher voice, then walk out. and utter broken English, "law suit".......

Local Albertson"s are removing self check out lanes. I don"t know if this is just local or system wide, makes no difference to me as I don"t use them.I"ve watched fairly intellegent looking people almost reduced to crying trying to get it all right in those lanes. Not for me.

If you don't like the service at Krogers, you should patronize your locally-owned supermarkets. Oh, but they all went out of business because you and everyone else went to Krogers because Krogers was cheaper. And why was Krogers cheaper? Because they save money on service.

A while back my son and I went to Dillons store and we had a few items and he used one of the self check outs. I never see one before and was totally dumb founded.

I'm surprized wally and Meijers havn't put the local Kroger out of business here in north-central Indiana. Especially since they are usually the highest. (we do not shop at wally world or home depot--- the wallyworld of the lumber stores-- as they have cost us local jobs by going to china)
Even our local/regional store is often cheaper (and a gallon of gas closer) than kroger with no auto lines and bag boys that still take your groceries out.
I try to avoid the auto lines but will take the shortest line when available.
Never seen an autoline at any lumber stores around here.

I worked in the grocery stores for years. As a contractor on back up power systems. Sat in on many store meetings. I know for a fact that Albertsons,Tom Thumb. Krogers and many other stores. Did not want the self check out lanes. But the public did,so that is what they got. When those things went in. Store theft went up. Constantly having problems with them and were really a pain in the a$$ for the stores.

When they had the regular check out lines. People complained about standing in line with only a few items. So they went to the 15 items or less line. People abused that line and complained again.

So they went to the self checkout lines. Store theft went up,the things broke down and still people complained. So if you want to blame someone for a job being lost blame the public. Because they got what they ask for.

And don't get me started on the shoplifting videos I used to watch in the stores. People are really amazing at what they will steal.

The stores did not want the things in the first place. The public did and they got what they asked for. They were money pits from the start and always have been.

Have no fear, I read just last week or the week before that grocery stores are now starting to remove them.

I never use them unless I let the show me helper do it all just as if I went through a regular checkout.

Now if they want to give me a discount for using one then okay I"ll use them. Since I"m paying for the same as others I expect the same service.
