painting plastic???

Hey folks,
Time to make the quad one color again. Last time, I washed it good and got some camo paint from the PX and sprayed it (just the plastic).

Looks like it has leprosy now. Still wanna do it on the cheap. Is there a trick to getting paint to stick to the plastic without a lot of work/prep? This thing isn't pretty and won't be in any shows. Flat paint is fine also. Even primer if it's a better choice.

Thanks, Dave

An automotive paint store should have a spray-on product that will help with adhesion. It's used all the time by body shops on plastic bumper covers, etc.

Depends on the type of plastic. THere are adhesion helpers and special plastic paints too.

Used to work in plastics. To get labels to stick to polyethylene parts we would lightly (LIGHTLY) go over the surface with a torch. basically just passing over the surface with the flame quickly. That would burn off the waxes/oils that bloom to the surface of the plastic and prevent paint/glue from sticking. Since you've already painted it this will not help but will for the next project with unpainted plastic surfaces.

What about this krylon (?) fusion paint? I beat this thing up too much to put a bunch of money/labor into it, but want this tim e to be the last except for touchups.

I painted one for my daughter and one for my wife about a year and a half ago. I used the Krylon Fusion paint, for plastics, on the wifes and it seems to be holding up pretty well. The color my daughter wanted, watermelon pink, wasn't available in the Fusion so I used regular Krylon along with an adhesion promoter that I found at an auto parts place (don't remember which one). Both were scuffed until it dulled the shine with 400 grit prior to painting. So far both seem to be holding up pretty well, especially my daughters that has been bumped into a couple of things, etc that scratched the paint. One thing for sure it's not flaking off like the stuff someone else had put on there prior to me buying them. That mess never bonded to the plastic and would flake off if you scratched it with anything. Given what I have seen on both machines so far the Fusion paint and the regular paint with the adhesion promoter have both bonded and, hopefully, will last a long time.

Dave last time I painted plastic was about 15 years ago on a kids pedal tractor. I gave it a quick going over with sand paper and sprayed it with implement paint. It's lasted about 20 years with kids playing with it! And it sits outside year round!

dave, the plastics on a quad are different than an automotive bumper. it seems they are a high silicone plastic and its difficult to get paint adhesion. do not scuff the plastic with a scotchbrite or sandpaper. it will pull hairs out of the plastic. warm water wash with car wash soap, clear water rinse and dry with a blow gun. we use a prep product called bulldog. you body shop supplier will have it. comes in an aerosol can. stinks to high heaven. bulldog is an adhesion promoter.

Yup - the Krylon Fusion should work. We painted four plastic chairs that we use all summer, out in the sun and the rain 24/7. It does eventually fade a bit, but it sticks pretty good.
