Discovery Cockpit

Here is something worth the couple of minutes to view: a 360 panorama of the Space Shuttle Discovery crew cabin flight deck. This is pretty cool----and maybe the last time we get to see it before it’s stuffed and mounted at the Smithsonian!

Think the instrument panel in your new JD is confusing? Wait until you see this!

pretty cool, kindy funny though probably a multi billion dollar machine and they have to have work lights hanging there so they can see which button to push? go figure!

Yea I saw that too and thought it was odd. Possibly they were just there for the pics. Did you notice they had writing on them in marksalot, the left says FWD and the right says MID. Also wondered why one seat had a padded cushion but the other one didn't.

Where I live we have a museum for space flight that is affiliated with the Smithsonian, The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Discovery Center.

The KCSDC had an excellent direct in its early years and because of his many contacts this museum holds some artifacts that no other museum has.

It has the original and trouble plagued Apollo 13 capsule. The Libery Bell capsule that set on the ocean floor for years. And hanging in the lobby is an SR 71 Blackbird spy plane. Many other notable items as well. Also many reproductions that were used in movies. Space works, a branch of the museum, built many mock ups such as the Apollo 13 capsule for the movie.

The KCSDC and this area welcomes you to come for a visit. Perhaps send your child or grandchild or yourself to one of the Space Camps. Watch an Imax movie, watch Dr. Goddard's lab demonstrations, etc.

A true treasure for this area and for all of America.

Very cool! One thing I noticed was that all the flight insturments are video screens.
Just would be kinda scary to land that bird if they malfunctioned..Seems like it would be good to have some basics like artificial horizon and airspeed displayed on separate insturments.

But then again I am not an astronaut.

Great link! Thanks downsouth!

Geez, with all that money you think they could have more comfortable seats, let alone a cushion for both of them!!!!

"Where I live we have a museum for space flight that is affiliated with the Smithsonian, The Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Discovery Center."

Ditto.

I've been there a couple of times myself and it is worth going to. Also while in the area there is an underground salt mine that gives pretty interesting tours.

"Also wondered why one seat had a padded cushion but the other one didn't."

someone a couple days before launch went in to check things out in their civilian Bermuda shorts. sat down and looked at all the controls, the didn't have &6000.00 to replace cushion.

God bless the men and women who have the intelligence, bravery and patience to spend the countless hours learning all those screens, switches and dials and know which one to use, for any give senerio ,at any given moment, without hesitation or thought.
Then think about the program ending and not ever using that exact information again.

Thats because they are tearing it down. All 3 remianing shuttle will be on display at different locations once the program offically ends when Atlantis returns
