Today I get to replace the broken sickle drive belt on my NH495. Not looking forward to this job, not even a little bit. :>(

I'm gonna "try" to cock that box around to the outside instead of taking the sickle pivot bolt loose to get clearance (That's the part that tears up the rubber shock if it's not perfectly aligned).

Like I said, I'm gonna "try"........

Okay,

I'll try to remember to take the camera.

Think I now know what tore up that reel drive chain a while back 'cause the whole derned broken belt is now part of that little chain drive assembly. :>)

Everyone tells me that the upper part is the toughest; dunno, least I can get to that area. :>)

Tell ya what, I think the greatest punishment a fellow can give an engineer is to make them work on the stuff they designed. 'Course that'd be considered Cruel and Unusual Punishment.

Some of the stuff I see just makes me scratch my head and say "What were the thinking?" OR "What WEREN'T they thinking?!?!" Apparently this wasn't meant to break down.

I had to replace the sickle belt on my 461 a couple of weeks ago and it took several hours of work since the gearbox had to come out and the wobble box had to be slightly disassembled. Worst part was I had the manual so I knew there wasn't an easier way to do it. Good luck with yours, it looks like a big job.

Does anyone make a linked belt that will work in this application? I know that I used them on my lathe that runs pretty fast....I would think the RPMs are not that bad and the belt balance would not be a significant factor.

Just thinking out loud...

PS - On my Gehl, I had to remove a castle nut on the wobble but not anything else and the drive pulley was chain driven with a split config with 4 bolts to disassemble. Probably the only thing that seems to be better designed on that machine!

On Edit - They make a C profile belt which is what I have on my haybine. Not sure what the NH has.

PowerTwist Belts

I've used a PowerTwist for a fan belt on my dozer. It costs double what a V-belt does, but it saved about 6 hours of labor since I would have had to pull the hydraulic pump to change the V-belt. Other than having to retention the belt after the first hour of use, they work just as good as a v-belt once installed.

I won't complain about the NH489 we had I guess, at least you could turn the belt sideways and pound it through the gap with a sledge.

By garshins !! that silly thing came out of there. should go right back in. PLEASE don't take camera! costs too much when yer looking for something to throw at a job that don't go well.

Just a thought?????? take an angle grinder cut above the pully -- then replace cut out section with a (NS) Nebraskan simulated aftermarket bolt on replacement belt guard
