No, no, no. The ETD was always running, kind of like a laser printer that goes into a "power saving" mode. The ETD could create or even absorb power based on surrounding conditions. In use, the ETD would produce engine and auxiliary power as needed based on its internal load sensing systems.

ETD?

Electron-transfer dissociation, a method to fragment charged molecules in a mass spectrometer in order to obtain structural information

Or

Everhart-Thornley detector, secondary electron detector used in scanning electron microscopes

A few years ago I watched the Amish pulling the rear of a tractor that had a one row corn picker with a hopper wagon hooked to the picker. Four horse hitch pulling the train causing the rear part of the tractor to drive the picker.

I have to agree, sounds like an ole essex tri directional. Really what was happening was the horses were walking in front of the tractor because the tractor ran off of manure, along with absorbing energy from its surroundings.

didn't general motors have a (tractor) that you walked behind and the controls were designed to work like a harness......Don't think they were too popular though.

I believe he said it was an antique John Deere Horicon. Opened for business in 1860 and became part of the John Deere family in 1911.
