flat tires.....

Hey,
How do you folks that brushhog etc in rough and strange places keep from flattening tires? luck or is there a magic trick???
Gotta work this evening and a storm is coming so had my day planned to get as much as possible done. Finished up mowing , moved a couple round bales, moved some horses, hooked up the tedder and walked around the tractor to see a flat tire. Neighbor is taking it to be fixed while I have lunch and pout about it..... Still should get done in time tho...

Hey Dave,

The only things is to be observant and run old tires. Old tire are harder and worn cleats tend to push sharp objects over. But that only helps a little. We have a Brown Tree Cutter that turns so fast that if it picks up a piece metal it sends it into the side wall and ruins the tire.
My brother was bush hogging an over grown lot and ran onto building slab covered with vines. The anchor bolts sticking up got three tires before he could get backed off it.

I haven't got to that project yet, but I fond a set of ford 9N wartime steel cleats wheels, let's see them get a flat! Got to adapt them to the MF hubs, a couple choices how to do that. As for the fronts, a shop in town fills them with solid rubber for $150 a pair or so, and the weight is now there without bolt ons. yeah best defense is to keep an eagle eye, to the front and to the next swath. So, as I always say, slower the better... and - when new tires are in the cards, more plys the better

I don't do much brushhogging, so have been getting
away with watching carefully and being lucky. If I
did more, I'd get some tires (fronts, anyway) from
Gensco (sp?) - airplane tires on rims that fit
standard ag bolt patterns.

I use old truck tires that I leave out in the sun to get dry and hard. I put them on extra rims and load them with slime. Not a flat tire yet.

dave2, As others have said &&&&&&&&............
1..Size appropriate solid Laminated tires.
2..Airplane tires, 24 ply almost never have a flat again
3..Get a size larger tire cut out the bead and half the sidewall on one side and just under the bead on the other and and deflate the smaller tire and slide the over sized tire over the smaller to make an out side boot, re-airup the inside tire to apply tension the the tire and keep it in place
Ex...if tire on the shredder is a 13in get a 14in tire to make the boot. If 14 get a 15, If 15 get a 16.
4..Get a set of really nice Airplane tires for the shredder, have them professionally filled with that solid foam that is sometimes used in forklifts and construction equipment. Yes it is some what pricy! but well worth it. This is how BushHog and Servis/Rhino are sending out most of the new shredders here in Central Texas Now!
Hope this helps.

John A.
