Took a 5 day trip to Chicago from Southern Mn. over the 4th. weekend. Concentrated on the down town sky scraper area. I gotta say I was impressed. What a clean city. I looked down alleys and saw the dumpsters and loading dock areas and they were really clean and well kept. In our local city of Mankato ( pop. 50,000) there is garbage swirled and blown in corners around dumpsters and loading docks but not Chicago. Very clean and well kept. Another thing that surprised me is the number of people on the side walks. Not use to that. I mean it was solid people. And this went on until we went back to our hotel at about midnight. And then when we went out in the morning at about 9:00 side walk was already packed with people. I don't know if they walked all night or not. In down town Mankato you can walk for 10 blocks and maybe meet one other person on the side walk. Very different. We and some friends rode Amtrak out there and took a cab from station to hotel. My first time riding on a train and first time riding in a cab. Hooked up with other couples son and his girl friend. Girlfriend had gone to grad school in Chicago for two years and really new her way around town. Her personality is that of a take charge kind of person and she had the whole 5 days planned out for us. Showed us how to ride the city bus and tram all of which was a first for me as well. Took us to all the sites and scheduled time for us to relax back at hotel. She was the perfect hostess and "tour guide" You people from that state can be very proud of that city. I'm sure there are some bad parts of the city but I sure did not see any. Very impressed. Went up the Sears tower and they have four kinda bay windows built out on the top floor with glass floors that you can step out on. woo, scary. When it was my turn to step out on there I was hesitant, but finally did it. It held me. Any way, really a fun trip for this back woods farmer from small town Mn.

I agree, it certainly is one heck of a clean city for being so big. It's been dirtier, believe me. The loop is probably on of the safest spots down there & the L, Metra & Amtrak are about the only way to get around. The L, to me, is by far the coolest way to get around. I'll never get tired of weaving in & out of buildings & cruising over the packed toll & express ways. The Sears tower packs an awsome view & I hope you were up there on a fairly clear day. Whenever I do get down there, it's usually the end of March - early April & haven't always had the greatest visability. Too many people when it's warm. Nice weather makes Chicago go from winter ghost town to metropolis in no time. Grant Park is where I usually end up when it's summer & it takes forever to walk from the lakefront to any of the hotels on Michigan Ave. Speaking of parks, if you ever make it back there, you should check out Garfield Park. It has a century-old conservatory that features a massive palm room with over 80 different species of palm! There's sooo much to do in that town, I could go on all night. Glad to see I'm not the only country boy that ain't afraid to visit Chi-town.

I agree, Chicago is an impressive city and well worth visiting.

Another city I was pleasantly surprised by is in your home state. My wife and I stopped in Duluth last year and found it to be a fun place to visit.

Wife and I have spent several fun weekends in Chicago, and I was there on business on a semi-regular basis. Shopping on the Miracle Mile is a real treat for her. Best way to go from our area is to drive to South Bend, IN and take the electric train. Very inexpensive and drops you off right downtown. Fun ride too.

I live in NW Indiana, and I try to avoid the place. My girlfriend loves going there, where I live I can jump on the train and it will drop you off right downtown for 7 bucks..sure beats trying to drive there...

Will be there the end of July, wife has a conference and we are staying out by the Navy Pier. This is my third time there and I love visiting, always something to do. Love the Chicago Dogs. After a few days I'm ready to return to my quiet country life though.

I despise driving to and in that town, but the daughter and son-in-law bought a condo in the west loop so it looks like I'll be doing it for at least a few more years. Just real tired of dealing with the congestion.

Chicago is a beautiful, interesting city. But like all, it has its rotten spots and believe me,taking a wrong turn and accidentally blundering into one of them is an unforgettable experience: narrow streets, filthy tenements on each side, surly inhabitants loitering and sauntering in the middle of the street in front of you, and behind, glaring malevolently. It was still daylight but late in the afternoon, and my .41 Mag was packed in the trunk of the car. Still get shivers.

In 1965/66 I worked for the Chicago Tribune and attended a night school. I really enjoyed living and working in the city as I came from a town with a population of about 300. Quite a change to say the least.

I walked all over back then and felt comfortable doing so. On occasion I would walk as late as midnight. I should tell however that I lived fairly close to the Tribune and Wrigley buildings and I'm sure you know where those are in the loop area.

In 1990 while on a motorcycle vacation I returned for a visit. Photo at link below.

A few years ago I learned my ancestral history connection to Chicago. My ggg grandparents and some of their kids moved there about 1850. They survived the great fire of 1871, etc. and are buried there. Wish I had known all of that back in '65 and had interest to do research on the old family business, etc. Business bought and sold produce, cream, eggs, etc. Old city directories and newspapers are filled with their ads. One had a seat on the board of trade and later owned a large building which was leased out.
Motorcycling in Chicago.
