Squirrels, Chipmunks

If your family thinks squirrels and chipmunks are cute and fun to have around, I suggest you follow the boogers to see the destruction they have done around your place.

One example here: My clothes dryer was taking way too long to dry a load of clothes. It is a fairly new dryer so I suspected poor venting, not equipment failure. After checking inside and finding no blockage, I went to the outside discharge. This is a 4 louvered vent that opens when air pressure is applied from the dryer, and closes with gravity when not drying. The location is under the flooring of a raised deck, which has a floor joist fairly close to the vent.

The chipmunk had chewed through one of the louvers and packed the vent pipe with a fist-sized clump of cedar bark and other trash to make a nest with. The air pressure from the dryer had packed this debris against the three remaining vent louvers, which almost completely stopped hot air flow from the dryer.

This year I am up to 18 chipmunks, (3 today), that have failed their swimming test.

Aw-w-w....but they're so cute? How could you?

Feel your pain. With me it's flying squirrels. I have an attic full of 'em, leaving ruin, destruction and pillage in their wake. They're hairy-tailed rats.

I understand they love Romex. I'm afraid to get up there and look.

I know what yer sayin'. Around here, its raccoons. I get tired of hearing how cute they are. Finally had to write a little post about getting rid of them. Some folks just don't understand that critters and humans are not always compatible!
Crazy Coons

I had the same situation this spring only it was a bird. I would hear noises in the attic and I couldn't find out where exactly they were coming from until I saw a bird fly out of the louvers for the upstairs bathroom vent fan. I replaced the louvers and removed the birds nest from the vent pipe and the bird got in again. I ended up making a mesh screen and put it over the louvers.

Squirrels and coons used to eat alot of our birds sunflower seeds. At 50lbs every 2 weeks I rigged up an electric fence pos and neg coil up the bird feeder poll. The male squirrels had a bad habit of biting the coil when it zapped them. It seemed to give them lock jaw and the poor things couldn't turn loose. They would hang on and fry while I was at work. I would come home, see the sparks flying, unplug, and toss em the river (what was left of them). They've become more educated as I've only had one casulty this year. Now if I could just figure a way to teach the dang bluejays.
