O/T Saved an Old Car From the Scrapper! (PICS)

Here are pictures of a 1956 Plymouth Savoy.

A friend of mine got it in a scrap job and told me that he was going to haul it in! So I went to look at it and I couldn't believe that the owners wanted to just scrap it! Well, I looked it over and thought that it was in too good of shape to scrap, so I purchased it. It has the 270 V8 Engine and 3 speed on the tree with overdrive.

This car was being driven up until 2004, after the Hallam Tornado, it received some damage so it was parked. The damage is only some dents here and there. Before that all the body work was done, and it was repainted. They spent 2 years working on the body and getting it painted. They said that over $2000 went into the breaks as they had to have someone fabricate most all the parts.

Its a shame that this car was just left to sit.

I purchased the car for $550. Not to bad of price, and it even has a title. It isn't running, but isn't stuck either. I also have all the trim and bumpers. They are in the car.

I hope you enjoyed the pictures and the story that went with them!
Thanks for reading!

I really wished you stuck to old equipment... but... yeah, no one wants to rod or restore these, so someone has to save these ugly ducklings. I went into the city that had the F3 a few weeks ago, a little black suv was folded in half by the top of an old maple tree, it looked like a book, with a fluffy green bookmarker. Now, it don't run, but- out there you might know if it is true- in the tornado- if it- or right nearby got hit by lightning? Would this sort of kill the polarity? starter, gen, points? Heard someone mentioned this, can't say if it ever happened to anything of mine, hope it never does...

If I remember right the Savoy was the low end of the line trim wise. Darn nice lookin' car, we sure don't see them that good body wise here in Michigan. The V-8 had to be a small version of the original hemi I think.

Andrew: I am glad you saved it. I think some may be turned off by that bad color. If it was JD green or IH red it would go over better here on YTmag tractor forum. The start of the TailFins for Chrysler Corp. If you were in California, you would get a lot more $ real quick. Good luck with it...

Andrew,

Great save. My brother had a 1957 Plymouth and my mother had a 1957 Desoto. Major body style changes between 1956 and 1957. That was part of the appeal of cars back then. Different manufacturers cars looked different from one another and different year models looked different from one another.

I can't tell a Cadillac from a Honda any more.

Thought that was same a first car I ever drove, but mine had pushbuttons for shift. Mighta been 1955. I was 11 or 12. It was brand spanking new car belonged to my uncle Heyward from SC. Dave

Glad you were able to save it. My aunt and uncle that lived in Arizona bought one new. They drove it back here to Texas on vacation. While they were here they had air conditioning installed. That was the first time I encountered air conditioning. It was nice. I was 10 years old at the time.

Now what gets me is they were going to scrap it.

I doubt they would of got $550 for scrap I'm guessing 1/2 that ? and then they would of had to remove the gas tank and maybe even the tires too plus the gas burned to haul it in.

They were made both with stick or auto and the auto had pushbuttons on some The 1960 Rambler I had was the pushbutton tranny.

Hey, I drive one of those! Red and white, flathead six with push button PowerFlite automatic. Mine is the Plaza model, the base model, Savoy was the middle, with Belvedere on top. "55 and "56 are sort of oddball years for Plymouth, but parts are around and lots of basic things are avaialble at NAPA. Watch eBay for the oddball stuff you might need. The V8 is a good engine, sort of the grandfather of the modern Chrylser V8"s. I have the parts list and service manual if you need any info. The only tricky thing on those cars, or any old Mopar, are the Lockheed brakes, but they stop better than any Ford or Chevy of the day.

im sick. what kind of person would scrap a car like that. makes you think what else has been scrapped this nice. did anybody save the d17. i saw a 2006 or something around that year ford f250 that was already crushed. the tires on it were new and the spare was new and still in the truck. how sickning. also a ford 8000 tractor i seen went for scrap to. it was on ebay but nobody bought so he scraped it.

Only a few Fury"s came out at the end of the "56 model year. 1957 they were in full production. Fury was more an option package than model in those years.

The gentleman"s Savoy would be a P-29. If his VIN starts with "15" it is a Detroit car, 22 is Evansville, and 26 is Los Angleles.
