My grandpa called and is giving me an old 14" poulan "mudshark" chainsaw, how do these compare to other brands and can I still get parts for them. I hope to use it to trim up some tree branches thanks

Don't know about the older models, but got a couple of new ones that were cheap (one $90), and I've run the heck out of them with no problems. Actually like the older ones a little better because they don't have the tool-less chain tightening feature. Many one this site and others have unfairly maligned Poulan. They might not be as quite as good as Husky,Stihl or Jonsered, but for the casual user they are entirely adequate and cost roughly one third of the big names. Do avoid ethanol gas which I would recommend with any chainsaw. So if it runs grab it!

You will find parts are easy, the whole thing was in different colors to be a sears, wards, who's ever, but mine quit oiling, still runs, just use a can to oil the chain every few minutes, they are fine.

I've got 3 Poulans and have cut a lot of wood with them. A couple things I've learned:

1. Pay close attention to replacement chains. I get Oregon brand. The stock Poulan chain had 2 spacer links between cutter links. Good chains have only 1 spacer, hence more cutter links.

2. Remove and check the muffler periodically. There is an internal piece with a baffle slot that can carbon up and reduce speed and power. I used a screw driver to clean it and slightly enlarge the outlet.

poulan is owned by Husqvarna. The cheap husqvarna are orange Poulans. Your saw has a piston oil pump. A piece of wood can be pushed into the pump, shearing the plastic gear teeth. $12 part
