JD 1962 3010 injector pump

My tractor won"t idle or throttle up. But, if I loosen the return or bypass line allowing leakage to start there, it idles up and will throttle. I am not a tractor mechanic by any means. I just remember the by-pass from the injector pump on the pill selector from working on injected sprint cars. Is this an indication of a bad injector pump, compression problems or someting else?

Check the fitting that screws into the inj pump that the fuel return line fastens to. It's a common problem that been discussed on this forum many, many times.

I am not sure of your problem, but it sounds like what my 3020D did years ago. I could move the throttle lever up and down with no rpm response. (The tractor would start and run, just not accelerate) What I was told to do is move the throttle lever wide open and tap on the injection pump. That cured it and never had that problem again. They said the throttle had stuck in low idle position inside the pump. Wayne

Doesn't it sound like the LINE beyond the fitting (between the fitting and the tank)is what is plugged, rather than the fitting/pressure regulating valve itself since it runs with the line loosened??

There is a rubber ring in the pump that is going south putting small pieces of rubber into the pump that is plugging a check valve in the return line. BOTTOM LINE IS YOU NEED TO HAVE THE PUMP REBUILT. Have the injectors rebuilt at the same time. This way you will know that your fuel and ignition system, the pump and injectors on a diesel engine are both of these, are in correct working order.

The 3010 has banjo fittings at injectors for return line which sometimes plug before the fitting on pump. Bottom line is pump rebuild and test injectors. Common problem.
