how do to start a Rumely Oil Pull Tractor

I have an old Advanced Rumely Oil Pull Tractor that has been sitting in a shed for many years without being run. It ran in the past but the knowlegable person who ran it is not available. I need to move it. Can someone give me step by step instructions on how to prepare it for starting and how to actually start it?

Just push the "start" button on the remote........

Sorry, couldn't resist :) Good luck with the old gal.......

I may be speaking completely out of place, but I had a classmate who was working on an old (make unknown) tractor. He said on that one he had been told to retard the spark all the way, turn the engine to the compression stroke and then just past top dead center, and then retarding the spark lever to allow the engine to self start.

If you retard the spark, how do you retard it more? Perhaps you were meaning to retard just a little and then after you get it set to retard all the way.

Since a Rumley has NO forced oiling, you need to pre-lubricate the engine by turning the crank on the oiling pump about 60 turns, BEFORE you attempt to roll it over..

Ron..

why waste time trying to start it if you just need it moved? just put a chain around the axle and move. You could spend a week getting it running if it sat that long.

a lot of old tractors have a spark retard lever. even some stationary motors do also. prevents kickback when hand cranking them. the field marshall's could be started with a shot gun shell. kinda confused about retarding the spark lever to allow the engine to self start.

Most of the ones that I see at shows have
another engine to start them. Usually a big
flywheel type mounted somewhere on the frame,
with a belt hooked up to an idler shaft.
At the "Badger gas and steam show" at Baraboo
wisconsin they have 3 or 4 running. I've seen an
owner CLIMB the spokes to get one turning over.
Perhaps another tractor with belt pulley could
start one

I don't know but sure envy you. Advanced, Rumley, Advanced Rumley, Case or whoever, sure wish I had one. Talk about a controlled explosion on wheels. I figure it takes a master, of which I am not.

Good luck just the same.

If its sat for years getting it to run will be a chore..

You will need fresh fuel and flush all the lines..

The mag will probably be dead..Check for fire at the spark plugs..

The mechanical oiler will need fresh oil and will need to be turned quite a few turns..

Years ago I used to have a light weight Oil Pull and often just belted it up to another tractor..

Its been so long that I probably forgot something.

Fixer, if this is a light wieght model. first lube all the grease fitings. oil governor and valves, put oil in lubricator. If tractor has sat for a long time, i would make sure any thing that should move will move. Gear shifter in neutral crank lubricator 50 or 60 times. Make sure the fuel and water pump are not stuck and lube with kerosene. put gas in starter tank on fender. [Rumelys only like fresh gas] Put four pumps of the primer pump, if not working pour a small amount in carb. Set choke. Set flywheel brake on fly wheel. Make sure starter lever will pull out of fly wheel at bottomof stroke. pull fly wheel lever and set in notch keep your body away from lever and pull down. If tractor has sat for a long time i would check spark and clean the plugs. if this is a heavy wieght i do not know. good luck Philip

My uncle had 2 Rumley Oil pull tractors, 1 of them was a 15-25 I believe and we started it by grabbing the flywheel and pulling as hard as possible and it would start on gas, don't remember ever setting any other things. This was back in about 1940 and they always called them 1910's which I assumed was the year made. The other was a 25-40 and had a long crank handle wgivg i could never pull. other than that I'm no help to you. Good luck on getting it started.
