O/T Tomato Question

I have one tomato that is all wilted; all the others are tall and healthy. Should I pull the wilted one? Is it okay to compost? Thanks.

Larry

It depends on why it wilted. If it was a disease I would throw it away or go bury it in some location far away from the garden. Composting or burning could spread some of the pathogens. And if the whole plant is wilted I would pull it and get rid of it ASAP to minimize the effect on other plants.

Check it for damage from bugs etc. Also by chance for some reason it it not getting water and the others are?? It could also be broken off close to the ground and your just not seeing that or it could be a worse problem and then you need to pull it and burn it

BJB - you sound knowlegeable to maybe ask another off-topic question, but related to gardening. My sweet corn is about 24" tall. Just about every stalk has one or two "short suckers" coming up out of the root. What would you or anybody else recommend I do with them? Leave them, chop them off or pull them out? Thank you for any recommendations.

Never compost anything that dies of "unnatural causes"- not worth the risk of contaminating your compost.

I never compost tomatoes anyhow- They're a member of the nightshade family, vines have an odd smell, just doesn't seem like somthing that should be in the compost, somehow.

Check for cut worms near or just below the ground.

I always wrap the stems with paper to prevent cut worms from eating my tomatoes.

I always leave the suckers on. They usually will produce an ear of corn also, and while each ear might be smaller than if there was just one ear, the 3 combined produce more corn. Nearly every stalk in my corn patch has atleast 2 suckers, and it is that way every year. I just leave 'em on.
