How do these guys get CDL's?

Bridge construction with lane closure and width restrictions. One lane road with 9' width. Driver tried to go thru with tractor trailer and got it wedged. He can't speak or read english. Road will probably be close the rest of the day. I thought you had to be able to read the signs to get a license.

They give him a license so he will have ID and can vote. I doesn't have any thing to do with driving, don't you know.

Had a friend that passed away recently that had had a CDL or the equivilent, for most of his life. One of his biggest rants was all the BS we had to go through to prove our identity, etc, and then all the hoops that had to be jumped through to get a CDL...........only to sit there taking his test and hear the guy in the next cubicle having everything translated into Spanish for him so he could get his.....This makes about as much sense to me as the deal where you need your SS Card to prove your ID to get a license, but can also use your license to prove your ID to get your SS card like they talked about on here awhile back. I ran into that several years ago when I got mine renewed and mentioned the idiocy of the whole deal but they seem pretty oblivious to just how stupid the whole process is....

You know, I think this whole story about illegals getting licenses in the US is completely bogus... Totally fabricated to give the right-wing talking heads something to whine about.

I don't know about where you live, but where I live you need to provide TWO forms of identification, one of them being a birth certificate, to get a driver's license. As a general rule, the rules don't vary much from state to state.

You also have to pass written and road tests, which means you need to be able to read and write SOME English.

There is no way an illegal alien with no identification and no means to understand the DMV clerk or take the test could possibly get a license. Heck, I barely had the documentation necessary to get my license.

We do, however, have a reciprocal agreement with our neighbors to the immediate North and South. If they have a valid driver's license in their country, it is also valid in ours.

Well There has been cases of someone taking a road test for someone else. or written test. One guy i know counterfited a licence with truck and motorcyle endorsement etc before his car licence exspired. He renewed it and walla he is a class 1 truck drive scool bus cycle stc. (that was about 1972 and he is still going strong!!!!

Come to Maryland! We are a sanctuary state, run by the libs.Anyone can get a license here! The World Trade Center bombers had Md. licenses. As our weasel governor says "Multiculturism is alive and well in Maryland"!!!

Where I worked a few years back, boss was trying to get real good illegal worker legal. Boss was taking SS out so he knew he had a card. When folks in Austin ask him for SS card, He smiled real big, pulled out his wallet and handed them 3 SS cards.

Better check a little closer if you don't believe, New Mexico issues driver licences to illegals. Legally I might add. Google it. The current govenor is trying to change it, but right now, it's legal! I know, I live here!

I'm with mkirsch on this. Mostly just BS to make a good story. Maybe one in thousands. Yes, there are Mexican drivers, but they have to have papers too. Best friend's son just got his in Colorado. 3 full days of testing and paper work. This is so he can drive a cattle truck from feed yard to packing plant.

Currently all you have to do is prove you LIVE in NM to get a state issued ID, you have to pass the driveing test of course to get a license. Also should mention go to NMDMV on the net and you can see that in New Mexico the booklets and the tests are available in spanish. New Mexico is a dual language state. (which I have no problem with, just pointing it out)

Obviously you don't know what the H*** you're talking about.

Lots of states don't have a lawful presence requirement.

Here in Wisconsin a few illegal got license by paying off Hispanic clerks. 2 of the clerks in Madison got convicted this spring for official misconduct as in taking bribes and conspiracy for identity theft. A fatal accident from dangerous truck couple years back had the truck driver hard to question because of language- but final questioning found that he"d got his license -CDL- from Illinois by paying $200.00 to Chicago area inspector after giving note from a Dem party ward captain or something. Mann hatte geldt, Farht Mann-or something like that meaning have money, will travel.. RN

Those same guys aren't susposed to be able to get a social security number and legally a job in the US either but they manage. I'm sure they can find a way to get a drivers license.

We have guys here hit the low rail road bridges in the area about once per month. They are clearly marked for clearance but doesn't seem to matter. I'm know there are a lot of good truck drivers on the road but there are some that are down right scary to know they can get behind the wheel of something so big.

Don"t think for a minute it doesn"t happen. I live in a region that sees a lot of garbage trucks from the D.C./Baltimore area, on the way to a couple of big commercial landfills. Almost all are driven by "Hispanics". Several have been stopped that were being driven by 13-14 yr. old boys, while the guy with the permit was asleep in the sleeper. Others have one driving, one "riding shotgun", and one asleep in back. Usually only one will have a valid permit, and the truck rolls around the clock. They don"t stop even to maintain them, and it shows. Several years ago, four trucks were speeding on a back road that they were restricted from travelling on. Ran a deputy off the road. He gave chase and with the help of his radio, had all four stopped before they got to the landfill. Wrote the first up and sent him on his way. Goes to second truck, driver hands him what appears to be a valid permit. Problem was, it was for the driver that just left. Second deputy goes to landfill and arrests him. Turns out it was his picture, but he wasn"t who permit said he was. Third also has a permit for the first. You get a permit, sell it, go back and say you lost it, get another, and keep going. Fourth driver, didn"t want to pay for an illegal permit, so he just taped his picture to a credit card! Actually gave it to the deputy! It turned was stolen. Big day for the sheriff"s department. All were arrested and charged with speeding and driving on restricted road. Three for giving false identification, one for no ID at all and possesion of a stolen credit card. One for identity theft. And guess what? All were here illegally, and were deported. With our border being like it is, probably were back behind the wheel of the same truck in a couple of weeks. So don"t think it"s just made up for a good story!

Did I forget to mention that they were MARYLAND permits? Oh, yeah, no insurance and none of the trucks or trailers would pass an inspection, either! Many thanks to our neighbors to the north! (I live in Central Va.)

This is something I could never understand. Years back, I worked on a jobsite in Brooklyn, N.Y., Coney Island to be precise. I lived in NJ, the route I took to get there for the most part was crossing the bay at the Verrazano-Narrows, (Verrazano Bridge) taking the ramp to the Belt Parkway, following the Belt Parkway to the Coney Island exit.

For the time that I was there, over 1 year, where the F train crosses over the Belt Parkway in Coney Island, a tractor trailer would peel off the roof, collapse a trailer or any combination thereof, often times once a week, or a few time per month. The thing that gets me is that the connecting highways are clearly marked, they had sensors with alarms, etc., yet these truckers still hit that darned bridge, and I am surprised at how much that bridge could take, you could see the marks on the steel. In NYC it is very easy to understand, Highways are OK for trucks, Parkways are not. The drivers were usually placed under arrest, the company responsible for the clean up and removal of vehicles and freight. Signage from all approaches is very clear.

I agree, the professional demeanor of truck drivers today is not what it was. Remember the days when they would always stay right, flashers on when going up hills etc. ? Now they talk on there cell phones, weave in/out of lanes, and so many other things. Cripes, don't get me started, I just was on a building construction site and a loader operator was driving the loader and texting at the same time ! This site is shared by beverage center, so the public and these clowns have to share the same street, people are nuts today, everyman for himself, and you had best watch the other guy, he is the one that will do you in.

I've had my CDL since the feds required it, I had a Class 1 (NYS) several years prior to that, and logged in plenty of miles behind the seat. When took the CDL test, it was not the take home or open book, I studied and got 100%, most was common knowledge. I've kept a clean driving abstract and maintain a current D.O.T. physical card. Driving, be it a car or commercial vehicle is serious business, and as far as I am concerned there is a degree of professionalism required.

Where height is concerned, get a ladder and measure it yourself, I always do any vehicle I drive. I don't care what the sticker says, or what is told to me, measure it ! I've been put in situations where its been close on height or too low. Stopping and getting out of the vehicle may not always be practical, especially on a highway, but taking a chance that you will clear is absolutely stupid. I had to move a 235 CAT through Newark NJ many years back, dopey operator lead me into a real jam, streets to narrow, and a major (multi track-P.A.T.H. train above) tressle. I stopped, and had to figure out how to get out of this situation. Upon measuring, I determined that all I had to do was unbind the stick and boom of that excavator, extend and lower it, drive under the tressle, it was clearly a no truck route, then determine how to get back to RT 1-9 down a narrow street. I did it without a hitch, you can't take chances, either you know or you stop and get help, prior to proceeding. Accidents happen, things can be mismarked, road elevation raised and such, but for the most part these situations are pure stupidity.

Foreign trucks and drivers are exempt from DOT driver regulations. That was part of bill clintons free trade agreement with mexico.

Don't know if he was illegal or not. He wasn't Mexican, I was a witnes, so I was there when the police checked his license. Not the first one I've seen that couldn't speak or read english.

Every time I renew my cdl hazmat endorsement, I have to show ID and be refinger printed and approved by the TSA. Last summer I applied for a motorcycle lic. and still had to show two forms of ID. You would think that having a Hazmat endorsement on your lic. that you would be covered
as far as needing two forms of ID. Also had to pass the vision test.

I work with a guy who went to truck driver school, has a class A and Hazmat and will admit he can't back up a single axle truck and trailer so go figure.

I can tell ya from experience that it may have been his fault and maybe not. More then once when i was hauling oversized loads under permits that the permit dept dropped the ball and got me into several shell we say sticky situations . Twice while hauling new tire presses as i was 11 foot 11 and 3/4 inches wide a 1/4 inch under needing escort and the wonderful state of N/C who never sent me the same way twice out all 54 trips i made over two years hauling them to Wilson N/C . This one trip my permit stated that i was to run I77 south to I 40 and east on I 40 , Ok fine with me makes the trip longer but ok by me i have over 68000 setting on the deck i am 11-11-3/4 wide and 14-4 high and i am running along enjoying the ride and i top this hill and see the signs for construction ahead then i see the electric indian shooting arrows at me making me move over into the passing lane and as we top the hill under full power and start down the steep grade i see that the bridge is down to one lane and it is 12 foot wide with the cement barriers choking down the passing lane on the bridge . Traffic is really heavy and the line behind me is building fast the sign says 12 foot lane , this is going to be tight no wiggle room on this one all i could do was line her up and go for it . Put that load thru there with out touching either side and not putting a mark on the tire press , Come out the end of the bridge and one of N/C's finest jumps in his cruiser and here he comes i am tryen to get back up to speed and not hold traffic up as i am climbing the next hill and i am not stopping that load on that hill for no man. I get to the top and i pull over and grab my clip board and meet said cop and he begins to tell me that he can not believe that i put that load thru that bridge with out hitting anything . TOLD him that there are two types of truck drivers , one there are the guys that just drive trucks and then there are us old time truck drivers . West bygosh Virginia sent me one time with one of them presses straight into a 14 foot underpass on old US 50 , had to drop the air out of the bags on the tractor and trailer and use part of the ditch to get under it as there was no place to go and backing out was not and option . Pa. routed me one time with a 85000 lb load on a 10 ton road with 10 ton bridges and a 140 degree turn on a hill that got me high centered and hung and into a nasty fight with a cop . That time the trailer i was pulling did not have a ride hight valve to adjust the ride hight and i had to unhook the leveling valve under a drop deck to raise the trailer and also the tractor to get clearance .I am 65 and been driving large cars since i was a teen ager.

Does Il stand for Illinois?

Is the construction zone 80 and 55?

I heard it is bad. I have to go through there tomorrow.

I was just gonna say , ya'll can thank Willie and NAFTA for most of what don't make sense to a "normal' person on the road or in the bussiness. His real name should have been "RICHARD" because that's what he is!

Well, not the former Illinois governor that is about to go to prison, but the former Illinois governor before him that is in prison, except this week to attend his wife's funeral over in Kankakee, is in prison for selling CDLs for campaign contributions after he got caught by that accident on I-55 where a piece of scrap metal bounced off of a semi trailer and under a Dodge caravan of a Wisconsin family, a preacher, his wife, and their six children. That piece of metal punctured the Caravan gas tank and it burst into flames before it got stopped. The preacher and his wife were witness' to all six of their children being burned to death. As it turned out, the driver of that semi was an illegal alien that paid his $1,000 under the table, as did many others, to that former governor's campaign fund in trade for a CDL. A simple accident got him caught and I happened to be at the McCook Secretary of States office where many of the CDLs for $1,000 were sold, the day that State Police and Secretary of State Police took their computers, seized, as well as took employees out in handcuffs, including the boss. I remember troopers telling me as that played out over the following months and year that they were going to get him but good for taunting and thumbing his nose at them, and they did finally send him to prison. I remember as they were about to move on him, he made world news by putting himself in the spotlight by putting a moretorium on the death penalty, commuting the sentences on 162 deathrow inmates, some very violent, which got him the key to Paris, France for his stance, and Man of the Year by Amnesty International, so the law could not pounce on him when he knew that they were about to, so he got himself in the limelight to block them. He angered them more. And when they were about to pounce on him again, he pulled another to get himself in the limelight and back them off again, but I forget what that was. But...after he wasn't governor anymore and had no cards to play, they out waited and got him but good, and he now resides in a Federal Prison downstate Terre Haute. But while all of that stuff and the waiting game of the cat biding its time to pounce on the troublesome mouse, coming out in the news about him selling CDLs for $1,000 with truckers than taking them back to their states and having them reregistered in their states away from Illinois, at least 22 states revoked the CDLs of all drivers that convereted their CDLs from Illinois to their states during that time frame, forcing those drivers to have to retest in their states, or no more CDLs.

So how do or did some get CDLs? I just gave you a factual account on one way.

Gee where I live and I know this to be fact, all that has to happen to get a license if for someone from social services to vouch for a person, translator provided if you don't read, write or speak english for the test....OH BTW social services here don't care if they are illegal! But if you are an American citizen you have have to have a birth cert and SS card to get one.....go figure!

4 or 5 years ago a truck with a huge boat or
yacht tried to go UNDER the I-90 bridge on U.S.
53, at LaCrosse Wisconsin. It tore the entire
3rd deck/level off the boat and the rig got jammed under the bridge. They finally snaked it out by letting all of the air out of the tires
of the tractor and trailer.

Ray, where did you get the idea foreign trucks and drivers are exempt from DOT regs??!! I was a DOT cop on the Canadian border for years and I can assure you that's not true, or at least wasn't 3 years ago.
