Tractor Oil Question

I have a question about oil for older tractors.
I went to pick up oil for a farmal 300 and a oliver 77 that we use on our small farm. I wanted to get 30 weight low ash oil. But it is no longer available. So I asked service tech at the farm store and he told me to use 30 diesel oil. I was told later that I should not use any diesel oil in a gas motor.
Has any one heard this?
Thanks for any help. Jeff

I dont think that would matter but Im not a expert. I would not be scared to use a 30 wieght dsl oil in a gas engine

Not a thing in the world wrong with using diesel rated oil in a gas. Lots of guys do. Using oil only rated for a gas in a diesel will produce sludge.

We use 15 X 40 in everything, But the newest 15 X 40 is different, don't use it. On the can is a few letters like se and cd C is for compression motors (Diesel) S is for spark emgines (Gasoline etc) Hope this helps Vic.

Diesel standard oil is far better then any gas rated oil and will not hurt a thing if used in a gas engine but if you asked about doping it the other ay around ya not good

Diesel engine oils contain more detergents to cope with the soot produced by burning diesel. They also contain more zinc which acts as a lubricant. Using diesel engine oil in a gasser is fine but do not use gasoline engine oil in a diesel. Any oil labeled "fleet" is really a diesel engine oil.

Look at the API Classification on the back. All the diesel oils I've seen are rated for gas (spark) as well as diesel (compression).

hd diesel oil is rate with the cxxx rating for compression engines, but is also rated with Sxxx for spark engines... meaning it will run well in both engines...

this hd oil has lots of additives for wear, friction, piston scuffing, valve lash, ring coking, and about 30 other problems for heavy duty engine use.

using a 30 wt oil with little or no additives is not a wise decision. when 30 wt oils where the only oils in the 50s.. engines had to have valve jobs at 40,000 and overhauls at 60000 miles..

oils have improved.. so why would you use a 1950s oil?

It would be easiest to just use any API rated 10W30 in it.

It depends on the oil. If its rated CG, CF or CH or higher then it has low (or fairly low) sulfated ash content. If its rated CE rating or less I wouldn't use it as it actually has very high amounts of sulfated ash - the exact opposite of what you are looking for use in a gas engine.

The IH engines that need low ash oil are the last version of gasoline engines. These are the C157, C175, and C200 four cylinder engines and the C221, C263, C282, and C301 six cylinder engines. The reason for using low ash oil in them is to cut down on carbon build up on the exhaust valve stems. The carbon can cause the valve to hang open and under heavy load will lead to burned valves.

When looking for a low ash oil look for one that has .5% or less ash content.

well.. that's why the guy works at a farm store and not at a machine shop because he don't know nuttin.

C rated oil is generally superio than an S rated oil.

CNH specs 15w40 in all their older gas engines.

I use 15w40 in all my tractors now..

i wouldn't ask that guy the price on a bag of feed after eharing that answer he gave...

my bad.. though I'd prefer a 15w40 in any temp range a 30w was speccified. whoever told him no C oil in a gas tractor is the one that needs to be slapped. i misread the 'later told' to be as later in t he same store/same person.

we have been using 15w 40 diesel rated oil in all of our machinery for many years-gas or diesel, trucks or tractors and have had no engine problems at all even with many hours of hard use
