50 lbs bags of feed in a bushel?

About how many 50lbs of feed is in a bushel? I am looking at a 40 bushel hog feeder and am just curious how many 50 lbs bags it would take to fill it.

Well.... lbs is a weight, and bushels is a volume, so it won't really work out just right to give you a rcock hard answer depends how big (full) the bags are, not how much they weight....

But, often times, a 50 lb bag is kinda close to a bushel in size, probably a tad less.

Most grains are 56-60# per bushel, except oats@32#. Best guess is maybe 50# of ground feed per bushel, but so much depends on the mix. Hard to say because bushel is a volume measurement, pounds is a weight measurement, and ground feed is not a standard item like water or oil.

It all depends on what's in the feed. I know oat seed weighs 32 pounds to a bushel, and corn is 56 pounds to a bushel. I think the reason they went to 50 punds bags is so they palletize better. Hope this helps.

Pounds in a bushel:

Buckwheat = 48
corn = 56
Oats = 32
Barley = 48
Rye = 56
wheat = 60
Soybeans = 60
Orchard grass = 14

Taken from a 1925, Plymouth Binder twine memo book

Like others have said, a bushel is a measure of volume, so different crops have different figures.

its depends on what your feeding,but 50lbs would be sort of an average if your feeding grain.cubes would probably take less,chops more simply because they would pack more i would think.a bushel is a measure of space so to speak,what will fit in a bushel basket,weight depends on what you put in it.a bushel of concrete would be heavy!if it helps any,i put almost three 40 lb sacks of corn in my deer feeder made of a 15 gallon drum.check on buying your feed by the ton at your local coop,its cheaper than buying sacks.buy a ton,have them sack and pick it up as you need it.return your sacks and its even cheaper.you must be feeding a lot of hogs,to need a 40 bushel feeder.if you dont have that many,might be better off not letting it set in a feeder and just fill it part way.

Just remember.. finely ground hog feed is heavy because of the fineness. It is denser than corn, less air spaces between the grain. . Wayne

1 Bushel Equals: :
Wheat and Soybeans = 60 lbs. Corn, Sorghum and Rye = 56 lbs. Barley Grain = 48 lbs.Barley Malt = 34 lbs. Oats = 32 lbs.

You do the mathematics.

The standard size cube for a bushel is 1 and a quarter cubic feet or a box 12" square and 15" high But for ear corn that box is figured at 2 1/2 cubick feet or 12" square but 30" tall. The easiest weigh to tell how many pounds it will hold is make a box of the bushel size and dump feed intill it is level and dump the box and weigh out what you dumped out.

Like everyone said and I sort of paraphrase, "What is a bushel un-ground is a lot different ground. Milo is a good example. A bushel is sixty pounds but run through a mill it will become a peck. Corn on the other hand if just cracked doesn't lose much volume. The answer to you question is, it depends on what's in the feed. Mineral supplements add weight but not much volume.
