Why the High price for Black Sunflower seeds ?

We buy black sunflower seeds to feed the birds. The price for a 50 lb. bag has doubled in price since last year. Anyone know the reason ? Was there a poor crop ? Are they making more oil from the seeds ?

I was wondering the same thing. I was mixing it in with the chickens feed, they loved it and the egg production slightly increased. Last trip to buy more I left it there, too pricey. If I thought I could raise the price of eggs to justify the extra feed cost it would be fine, but we have regular customers who don"t like change (any more than any of us do).
Hopefully someone will have an answer for the increase, I too am curious.

So what ARE you guys paying?

Around here (north central ND), new crop bid (what a farmer contacting them NOW would get for harvest (LATE fall) delivery is $25.60 per hundred-weight.

My brother runs the local feed store. Told me they are getting 32.95 for a fifty pound bag. He agrees that the price is to high. But can't get an honest answer why it is so high.

Last weekend I paid $28 for a 50 lb sack. Feed the birds about a sack every month. The feathered friends are eating high on the hog!

That is probably the best and most accurate answer...........

I have to agree with Paul. Corn is subsidized but I don't think sunflowers are. Correct me if I'm wrong.
