I just read someone is traveling over 100 miles to look at a baler. Now that would be a major trip for me. Even to go to San Diego area which is 30 miles, is not done often. Most shopping is within 5 miles, and sometimes 12 miles to a tractor supply. Most of my mowing, or discing is within a 15 mile area. What are some distances you guys, or gals travel. Stan

30 miles each way to work. 1300 miles from our house to our vacation house. 90 miles from vacation house (near Palm Desert) to daughter's house in Escondido. Normal grocery trip is about 7 miles.

I like to say, I never go any farther than I can walk back, but we just went 60 miles yesterday for wife's eye exam. Don't think I could walk that .

My daily commute is a 60 mile trip. Some of my farm equipment was picked up from 250-300 miles away. Some is from 400 miles away. Regularly make trips in the 500 mile each way range. Couple of times a year take a 1000 -5000 mile drive either for work or vacation.

Have driven 3000 miles one way in 2 days to get to a wedding, we rotated 4 drivers though.

Our car gets about 30,000 miles a year on it.

My wife drives 42 miles one way each day to work. She's a LVN at a nursing home. Closest sit down restraunt is 50 miles, give or take a few. Only thing our town has is a DQ or a greasy spoon burger joint. Even just to buy groceries, we have to drive 50 or so miles.

I brought my first wife out here from Herndon, Va.

She at first couldn't understand why we had to travel 43 miles away to get groceries. :>)

I drive 50-55 miles each way to work daily.

The other half drives 50 miles to work in the other direction.

Can get groceries in town (6 miles) but the other half usually gets them where she works (bigger town, much better selection and better prices).

I've driven 500 miles one way to look at and pickup tractors and equipment.

Saturday morning 6:30 AM I left Minneapolis to go buy a tractor in Joplin MO. Got back at 8:00 AM Sunday.
1236 miles in 25 1/2 hours. Took a couple of 2 hour naps coming back then crashed pretty hard for about 5 hours when I got home.

I drove from Louisana to Minnesota to pick up a swather, buy most equipment out of state because farm eqipment is taxed here. I travel back and forth to Saudi Arabia every 4 weeks to work and back home, around 8500 miles one way.

Closest town is 5 1/2 miles. Closest town where you can buy groceries is 12 miles. Closest city where you can actually shop for just about anything is 100 miles.

I do most of my shopping on-line.

It's a 16 mile round trip to the nearest gas station/mini mart for us. 75 mile round trip to where I used to work. Seems strange when we DON'T drive a long way to get some place.

Got a friend that lives in Minot ND. We went there to visit a few years ago. He mentioned going to another friends house that was "just down the road a bit". That was 200 miles EACH WAY. It's all about your individual perspective.

Town is 7 miles from the house and I go in maybe 2 or 3 times on a busty week. The V.A. clinic is about 15 miles and I go there once in a while. The V.A. Hospital is 100 miles and I get to go there on the 28th. As for equipment I have gone as far as 100 mile for stuff but not often

Have a friend in Germany drove his tractor to a show If My memory is right 400 and some Km pulling a camper trailer--- even made the news on the local radio.

Let Dave2 tell you about some of his journeys also.

I wouldn"t think twice about driving 100 mi to look at a baler, but I also drive any where from 300 to 600 mi one way to work every week. I guess everything is relative

I've traveled 2-300 miles for a few of the machines in my collection. I pulled a hay conditioner 210 miles home behind a Ranger & have enjoyed a few 1hr 45min trips, by tractor, to the farm where I bought my baler & a few other machines. For any new CaseIH parts after this fall, I have to go either 30 min north or west of here. The usual IH dealership is only 3 minutes away. Unfortunatly, they lost their CaseIH contract a few years ago & lose parts support in September.

Just thought I'd add a picture of the trip I was talking about -- this is when he arrived at the show. radio announcer interviewing him.

30 miles each way to work, and or our other farm, same place. $35/week in fuel.

When I lived in NJ and worked in NYC, some days I logged in 126 miles, to make my rounds, get to the office, and site visits, though tolls and mileage were all reimbursable. I used to hold weeks worth of expense reports and bank the funds when paid.

'Fraid you'll drop off the end of the world???? Just kidding. Used to work 70 miles from home and drive it everyday. Would get up sat or sun morning and drive all over Germany to walk 6 miles and get a beer mug.
Saw an ad, made a call, and drove 700 miles RT to look at a horse (bought it but will have it delivered). I'll see something on TV that looks interesting, find it on a map, and go see it myself. Getting a little lazy tho. Take a lot of bus trips and if on a weekend to a specific place, take a train (up to 5 people can ride unlimited anywhere in Bavaria 1800 friday-2400 Sun for 15 euro). Bought my bailer 60 miles away and drove my tractor (8-10mph) to get it. Drive 100 miles RT several times a summer to drink some good monestary beer (wifes drives).

@ 30 miles one way into office,if I hit all the farms one day?Around 450 miles back when i was going and blowing.now,If i just hit farms and nothing else around 240 round trip.I rarely make the rounds in one day anymore.have small cabins for line shacks so i can lay over.cant see too well at night like I used too, and it takes three times as long to do anything when i get there!

About 20 miles one way to the Surprise Az.Shopping area, thats 40 miles round trip and the old Impala makes at least 3 trips a week and some times more.Hardware, HD, Lowes, Walmart, eating places, Doctors, Hospitals[2] Car dealerships etc all right near the Grand Ave.and Bell Road intersection.5 miles to the east is another large shopping area on Bell Road. Thousands of small buisness's with in a 25-30 mile range from the house.Fortunately we don't see or hear the traffic down there, although we see the lights in the sky , but it is a 20 minute drive and we are right in the middle of it. Phoenix Arizona is a large magnet for population growth just waiting to take off again.50 years from now it will be so large it will take all day to drive from east to west.

We go to palm esert several times a year in our RV . It's quite an experience going there.I was stationed at 29 Palms around 1957. Remember the Rattle Snakes very well. Got bit on the backside of my right leg calf ,Medical team did a superb job. Only a scar to remind me of it now. JH

I drive about 5 miles to work each day so that's not bad.
I've been looking for a second tractor and found one in PA which would be about a 18 hour trip one way for me. Still considering if it's worth it or not. Good to know I'm not the only one who would drive long distances for a piece of machinery.
Drove 12 hours round trip to pick up a rescue horse for my wife last year.

I live in ohio, drove to california to buy a tractor. It was around 5000 miles total and 500 gallon of diesel fuel.

I drive about 15 miles to work. Closest useful town is 12 miles. Longest trip was over 5000 miles. Went to BC through the States, as well as a bunch of driving through Saskatchewan. Also go to Ottawa 4-5 times a year, which is 360 miles one way. Did that trip in under 5.5 hours one time. Lots of empty 401 and 416 on that trip. Also did a trip to Manitoba 3 years ago that was 2900 miles total

Yeah.

A fellow who used to work for me had a daughter and son-in-law who ranched by Valentine. From their house on the ranch, the closest place they could buy a hamburger was 42 miles.

Bought a round baler last week 130 miles from home. Hitched it on and came home at 50mph. Never had an issue at all.

I live in SW Kansas in a small town of about 300 People --- closest grocery store is 17 miles - closest Walmart, TSC, Theatre is 40 miles - closest small city is Garden City and Dodge City - 80 & 100 Miles.
Oldest daughter lives 65 miles away -2nd Daughter lives in Denver - 350 miles- Oldest son lives in KC- 400 miles. Youngest son with 4 boys --- 2 blocks -- and I have the garage - we see them every day

Recently bought a grass slit seeder by Dallas-850 miles one way. One day down and one day back. Was cheap enough to make it worth the trip.

Our house is up hiway 74, about 10 miles out of Palm Desert. It's a nice drive unless it's icy, and yes, it does get icy in the winter.

I live out in the puckerbrush. 25 miles to a town big enough to have a McDonalds, 65 to the nearest mall.

20 miles one way to work.

I once drove about 1400 miles round trip to pick up a pair of used(up) trailer plows. It was sort of a mini-vacation, took our time, got some face-time with a cyber-friend, and stopped on the way back to visit with Son and DiL.

Didn't make a bit of sense financially, (those "free" plows cost me about $800 in gas and lodging) but it was fun.

What did you do for the next one? Plant a garden for groceries or did a new store open up, or you do the shopping.

Some day, perhaps next year, I intend to go to the ag show in Vista. I'll try to remember to give you a shout out on this board if I do. It's always good to meet other YT folks.

Wow, where to begin:
My hay equipment was sold by my uncle who hauled or towed all but the haybine from 280 miles away; haybine was out of MN near the Dakota border, 350 miles. JD 1630 and Fordson Major both came from 250 miles away (separately), Cockshutt 1850 came from 625 miles away, Allis 160 I just hauled from 750 miles away, seed drill and chain harrows hauled from 800 miles away, rake with dolly wheel came from 850 miles away, running gear/hay rack hauling from 250 miles away, plow and disc going to be towed home from 20 miles away, I sold the little Case VA and hauled it 100 miles to buyer.
The place where I live and where the animals live is 175 miles away from the haybarn where our hay is stored. I load 120 bales for highway travel 17 or 18 times a year. The hay fields I cut are as far away as 20 miles from our haybarn. I float the tractor and tow the equipment to the far fields. Other fields I drive the tractor to are between 2-4 miles.
I drive 250 miles to work but then stay for 7 days. I drive 2 miles for groceries, postal, hardware store. It isn't feasible for me to drive to ANY Ag dealer for parts - either order online or ask around at distant scrapyards for 5 months. Ag mechanic is 12 miles from our haybarn (where most of the equipment is stored).
I can't wait to move to that property to avoid driving 10,000 extra miles every year...
Jay

Where are you located? My daughter and SIL live in Carlsbad. I make it out there about every year/year & 1/2 to visit. Maybe we could get together sometime. I'd sure like to see more than concrete!

Guys, 25 miles to the County seat, HEB Food store, Walmart, Tractor Supply. I am 25 to 30 miles out of 3 other County seats too. There is a couple of small 1 horse towns where you can get gas, milk or beer but not much of anything else.
To go to Work?, That deepens on where and what county I am in,.... ave is 150 to 275 miles/day for 4 days each week!
Later.
John A.

7 miles to local grocery, TSC, or Walmart. Closest farm store I transact business with 15 miles.
Decent meal out except fast food, anywhere from 20-30 miles depending on how much choice.
Farms, closest 8 miles, furthest 145 miles, actual radius I actively farm is 20 miles in all directions
Miles driven per year per truck, 15000 on the least, 25,000 on the most driven one, plus car for personal use.
Typical hay delivery 35 miles

All mileage listed is one way.

I wouldnt hesitate to drive 100 miles (just an hour and a half) to look at something. Its not been uncommon for me to have driven that far for a date.
