Old Farm House Pictures

Here are pictures of the old farm house that sat just west of where my dad grew up. The house was located in Richardson County, just north of Dawson, Nebraska. This was on land that my grandfather purchased and farmed. The house was built by the Ogle family in the 1880's. The story goes that there were brothers competing to build the biggest house.

The house does not exist anymore, as it sat abandoned for 20 plus years before it started to fall in. The last time the house was lived in was 1959, and it was finally pushed in in 1980.

My grandparents could have lived in this house, but my grandmother didn't want to do all the cleaning that goes with a huge house. So, thats why it sat, and from there rotted away. The fire place that was in the house was taken out and sold to a restaurant in Auburn, Nebraska, called the Fireside Inn.

Its sad that this great house is gone. I was never able to see it, as it was gone before my time. But, I think it would be cool to try and build this house again from these pictures. That would be quite an undertaking though.

Enjoy the pictures!

Hi Andrew: Good pictures of a very well built home. Looking at that staircase took me a while since I have built some but not as fancy as in the picture. Of course almost all of the home was built on location,if I had to guess. There were "Kit Homes" around the early 1900s and Yes Sears sold many that were pictured in their catalog. I was born and raised in a farm home that was built about 1890 but only 2 stories. Footings were about 3 foot wide of large stone and concrete. Solid and well built. It had REAL wood flooring. All us kids had great fun playing on the smooth well polished hardwood floors. My brother burned it down without even telling anyone else he was going to so he could put in a new factory built house. Amazing how cold some people get towards anything old or others who grew up there also. These pictures reflect just how much wealth some people really had back in early days of farming in the mid-west. Thanks for posting pictures. There were a lot of well built buildings back then. ag.

Beautiful photos.
It reminds me of my first house. It was a grand old dame like that in a real bad part of Minneapolis. I bought if from a man who had owned it since the 30s - he was 95 in 2001.
You walk in from the front porch, through the vestibule, into the foyer and from there could go in to the LR, Parlor or up a similar staricase to the second floor.
Big old house - LR, DR, parlor, huge kitchen, pantry, back porch, 4 br on the second floor, huge 3rd floor attic.
It was a rooming house upstairs - I lived in the deluxe room then moved downstairs when I bought it. Had it for a few years and did a lot of repairs to it then sold it. It's still standing but has been slummed hard since I left and looks shoddy now.
I stole one of several stained glass windows when I left and replaced it with clear. I framed it and have it in my LR now.

that house reminds me alot of my great grand parents place on Galveston Island...their's was 3 stories plus the attic...termites got the best of it back in the mid 60's and it got torn down...sure miss that old place and the family...not many of left these days.
thanx for sharing pix.

that is the house of my dreams. I always liked the older styles its got alot of charm not like the shoe boxes we live in nowadays. great post!!!!

Now that's a house with some character. I saved the picture of it and if I build a house like that, which I would like to do, I will take you for a tour of it and stay over night. I don't know when I will find time but things have a way of working out.

Now you have got me thinking. I know that lot of you guys a girls have got a lot of talents besides farming so here is a challenge for all you guys and gals. I've got the perfect spot for that house but as I said not a lot of time. If anyone wants to help to bring this to be in any way they can, then the challenge is to get it built with your help. This must be first class all the way from planing to the final nail. If your one that I select you will be able to stay there on a first come first bases for a night for free as many nights as you want. Beatles65 for the first for the idea. I'm not talking money, I'm talking talent and labor, what ever that may be. Lets see what happens.

Lots of old houses like that around here. People have to tear them down as the taxes are crazy on them. Sometime the fire marshall will make you tear them down if in an area with kids that mess around.

There is a beautiful old one across the river, was owned by a very rich family that died out. Hasn't been lived in for a while, was only partly wired for electricity when it came through in the 1940's.
