went on a 5 mile tractorade with my W-6, tried to use 5th and pops out, not much travel on shifter, could hand hold some, for part of roads trip, talk about sore arm. [looks bad when wabbits pass you up],lol... how normal/abnormal is problem, and how hard/need to fix.... not a big issue, being I'll just used it for show/pulls instead now..... "next time I'll take smaller tractor to pass up them wabbits".lol

Several possibilities:

1 - Your W-6 was shipped from the factory on steel wheels and 5th gear is "locked out".

2 - The tip (lower end) of the shift lever is worn. However this usually also causes the transmission to get caught in 2 gears at once if not shifted carefully.

3 - Years of abuse (repeatedly grinding it into 5th while moving) have worn out 5th gear components.

If #1 the fix is simple: Remove the special 7/16"(?) lockout bolt near the front left corner of the tranny deck and replace with a shorter bolt. (This will now allow the shifter to now move fully into 5th gear position.)

#2 can be solved by removing the shift lever then welding/grinding to reshape the tip.

#3 requires the tranny be opened and parts (4-5 sliding gear and/or front mainshaft) replaced.
