jd 317 lawn tractor batterie wont charge

my 317 john deere doesnt charge. i have to charge it every couple of days to start so i decided the clean the terminals and then i remaove one of the terminals to see if it was charging which it wasnt. so the qestion is what do i do to make it charge besides the batterie charger.

The rectifier-Regulator. and a series of windings under the flywheel. The rectifier-regulator is the small metal box fastened to the tin flywheel cover. If you take a Mulltitester and check the ac voltage while your tractor is running. It should show 28 AC volts at the 2 outside wires on the plug that attaches to the regulator.

To continue from there, the center terminal outputs the DC charging voltage, 14 to 14.5 volts, which passes through the ACCY terminal on the ignition switch on it's way to the battery.

The ignition switch or the connections there are a COMMON source of charging problems.

ditto what mark ia said. when the regulator/rect. went on my late model 316 the batt light on the dash also came on. does yours have an onan or kohler? i will also add you can check the stator by unpluging the 2 outside wires on the voltage regulator and check each for continuity to ground if the stator is good then you should get no continutiy reading, if you get continuity then your stator or wiring has a short. for the onan motors the voltage regulator need at least 28v ac but i believe that upper 30's -40v is more common. if you have the onan p18g "a" the ac should read 28-41v and if you have the p218 "b or c" then you should see 28-57. another thing to look for is make sure your regulator is securely tightened to the sheet metal shroud on the motor or where ever its connected, a loose connection maybe causing you troubles. the voltage regulator from jd isn't cheap if i remember it was around $83, but if you search you can find them cheaper online or from onanoparts.com if you have an onan. good luck

i think it is a kholer but it is a 318 motor that is in it if that makes a difference. i bought from somebody and the said he 317 motor threw a rod out the side of it so he put a 318 on it.

Bob Are you sure that terminal don't need to be a hot wire from the switch to make the system work ?

If it REALLY has the engine used in the 318, it's an Onan. Deere offered a conversion to do that.

Charging systems are similar.
