Since we all use computers to access this site I though you might be interested in something I just learned after discovering I had a problem with Windows 7 in my week old Dell. Dell no longer supports the installed software (Windows) as part of the warranty. If you have a problem with the software, you have to pay $230 for one year support, which allows you 4 calls per year. Microsoft tells you to get help from the manufacturer, unless you want to pay $60 per call. I do not know if others, such as HP/Compaq, Sony, etc. have also started the same practice or not.

Kind of like the extended warranty you can buy on a new or used car? The warranty covers only the parts that never give trouble anyhow, so how can they lose?

Dell's customer service has been awful for several years now. I would NEVER recommend anyone purchase one. I have recovered several Dells after they stopped working and dell customer service wouldn't help because they were out of warranty. When my parents Dell acted up, I bought a full OEM version of Windows 7 and removed all trace of Dell from the machine other than the logo on the case. My new machine (bought in Feb) is HP. Not sure of their customer service, but I got a much better machine for much less than Dell.

Most Windows problem can be resolved by searching the Microsoft website for free. Or Google.

have been that route seriously, including Microsoft answers. the problem is that some printers do not show in the Devices and printers window, even though they have been installed and show in the print dialog box and work properly when printing. Since it was an HP printer I called them and they spent 2+ hours trying to solve the problem, and finally came to the conclusion it was a Windows problem which I agreed with, and then i called Dell, which is where it got frustrating. If you do some looking for hidden printers or missing printers in Win 7, it appears it is starting to be a noticed problem.

It seems electronics service was never very good, and has gone downhill from there over the decades.

Never bothered with any of the companies, other than visiting their home web pages for help.

Go with a Mac, I never thought I would but my family bought one for me for Fathers Day two years ago and I am so glad. Not one issue has come up where as with dell hp and toshiba they all had issues repeatedly. Now I have not used windows 7, they say its a big improvement, but I will never go back to windows.

I hated Mac, until I got one 6 years ago. Since then I've moved 5 of my family members over. My "helpline" calls have dramatically shrunk after the first couple of months of adjusting.

You pay a bit more, but the machines are pretty well built. My first laptop I drove over with my truck when it was 5 months old. Broke the screen and squeezed the CD loading slot closed. I used it for 5 more years and only stopped as the hard drive was full and the battery nearly worn out. Wasn't going to put any money into it.

It was just as fast as when I bought it and ran top notch.

I had a problem with my PC so I went to a Mac. I'll Never go back.
Yeah it takes a little getting used to. But fewer viruses. And the
best service you can imagine. Any problems call, First its an English
speaking American. No foreign people. If you buy the warranty its 3
years of perfect service. YEah they cost more but you get what you
pay for.

problem solved. i had installed a Rosewill LPT card along with the drivers form the cd that came with it, which was ok, but when computer would reboot, windows would update the original driver with a different one, that created a conflict.
