This is a little off topic but I thought you folks might enjoy looking at this. Things are done a little different in Minnesota.

Yikes! Gonna need a change of shorts after that episode! Glad no one got hurt, though--the house and such can be replaced.

I don't see what is enjoyable about that, if you have ever seen a hydraulic or lattice boom crane go over causing injuries or death. The operator or person on the ground is obviously highly upset, which is neither funny or enjoyable. Put yourself in their shoes.

It would seem that there was not enough counterweight on for the pick radius/load from the center pin, someone really screwed up on that set up, either undersized the crane or miscalculated the counterweight, sharp angle on the boom, suprised the buzzer did not go off an shut it down first.

Reason I say this is not to be grumpy, I've seen cranes topple, one with a fatality, setting up this kind of equipment requires knowledge and experience and can be highly stressful for all involved, I did it for many years up to 500 ton hydraulics and 4100, 777/888 size Manitowoc crawler with lattice booms, just gets my goat when someone thinks this is entertainment, its not !

I worked around cranes for years (Journeyman Ironworker) in the '60's to the 80's for "Armstrong Steel Erectors"..yep, Jack Armstrong, the All American Boy...!!!

His crane operators were so darned good..never saw one go over, but they could be raising the out-riggers and still be booming out for ya...!!
His 18 ton Hydro-crane operator had to walk some bridge beams for over the Olentangy River that the operator of a 50 ton Manitowok operator refused to walk with..
Once placed, one crane on each side of the river set the beams..

Well yes, don't mind me, just hits home when I see something like that, used to be that guy cursing when things go wrong, know how it feels BTDT LOL, though none of mine ever went over, have seen it more than I would have, good no one got hurt and maybe just some outrigger damage, house probably protected the boom, though they will need some new trusses, sheathing, and shingles, & a pool !

I was surprised that went over like it did. Didn't seem like there was that much weight on that pick, maybe a 1000 pounds? I think that was just a large jacuzzi, mostly fiberglass.

In the news story they said the machine messed up, modern cranes have their own sensors to keep the operator creating this situation; something messed up electronically.

Since no one was hurt, the news media portrayed this in a rather jovial way as well. I'm thinking that was not his house but his neighbor's house it went over? The tub was not hurt, got installed a tad later than planned.

The machine messed up? Somebody got fed a line of bull. Mabey the machine had a sensor system that should have prevented it from extending that far with that load.... and that system didn't work... but the bottom line is that someone tried to lift more than they had crane for at that extension. Looked to me like it just plain tipped up like a teeter-totter on it's rear outriggers.
