My friend has a collection of Jacks and thios one has stumped both of us . What is this supposed to look like inside? We cannot figure out where the wire spring goes. No Name on Jack -- just a few numbers.

Strictly guessing since I can't compare the size of spring coil to the various projections it might go over.

Thinking about a modern "Handiman" jack makes me think that it goes under the lever that changes the direction of the jack, i.e. up or down. That would also hold the pawl of the lever against the appropriate ratcheting lever.

If not there then lower left stud in the lower photo just inside of the cover near the rounded portion.

Just guessing you understand.

It will fit on the stud you are talking about.

we are having problems routing the spring on the long end so it will ratchet in the down position.

Numbers on it are ( on the lifting tang ) 012NS , And on the base is 0124.

Lyle ----I went to the simplex site maybe have to join it -- LOL seems like they are close on some of the pics.

I just thought someone had one here like it could open it and take a pic.

I find it hard to believe that you and your friend would even consider picking up a piece of equipment without getting a manual or asking the what's, where's, and when's when you got it. Instead of coming on here and asking a question..

How'd I do Bison

Just kidding..

Here's how you solve the problem...... Get on ebay or craigslist and find the same jack. Email the seller and tell them you want to make sure everything is complete and have them remove the cover and take a picture for you so you can make sure the spring is intact and properly placed.

I know those jacks are around here I used to use them leveling pumpjacks, I will ask around and get maybe pics of the spring

Never got ta thinkin about gettin a manual with it. If I did I would have probably wanted the machine it was intended to pick up.

He does have several kinds he has collected & now only one jack off for a full set.

Think I'll use your ebay Idea sounds like it may work !!

Out here in Western Kansas we used some jackks that were similar called Avery Jacks. They would lift a house --- the cogs wer NOT enclosed like those are

Mine's a Simplex, and I don't think it has the cover plate or a spring, either. I'll double check tomorrow.

It's the first one I grab for light lifts.

You mentioned some numbers stamped here and there. Are there enough consecutive numbers to be a patent number? If you have the patent number, you can scare up the original plans and find what you're looking for. If I remember correctly, Google has a seperate section for patents.

After looking at it, try this. Put the loop of the spring in that notch on that little arm (G) and probably the long tail of the spring behind that peg in the frame and the short tail to the lower dog.

We didn't He bought at flea mkt and spring was loose inside like someone else took it apart and didn't know how it went together. only paid a buck for it no real loss for on a shelf. still would like to get er workin.

Ok something like this ? It looks closer to anyway we tried it, but when trying to place on a down position it pulls out both dogs and just drops -- not allowing the ratcheting mechanism work.

Ok The bottom dog does the lifting and the top dog does the catching, but won't work in reverse to let it down.
