What gets in people's heads?????????

Stupidity reached a whole new level this morning.........

We have several pastures scattered around town with 4 being in one area that is us and some grain with a few stripes with new trees that people don't want horses on. One of them is in a safe corner without the usual access roads that surround the others so that's where we leave the stallion with the last batch of mares to be bred so they can humble him up a little and get him ready to turn in with the guilding to finish out the year. Someone else in town has a couple mares that they ride now and then but have pretty much no knowledge of horses... They bought a piece of orchard joining the "safe" pasture and I asked them right away if they'd rent it to me. They said not right then maybe later. Couple years passed and last week I go and see they fenced their piece off with a shoddy job of old used electric tape and plastic posts. Used my fence as one side of theirs and tied into my tape/posts grounding my fence out. Had a talk with them (him) and helped him fix the fence right. Told him that we'd be moving the stallion 3rd week of June and asked him to hold off til then before putting his mares there (talking about a piece 20ft wide and a 100ft long). He got a little testy and said it was his and he could do what he wanted which is 100% true. Told him the dangers of putting a strange mare (that could be in heat) and does not know an electric fence next to a stallion. He made a smart comment that he was thinking of having his mare bred anyway but he'd think about waiting.

FF to this morning: I come off night shift, check/feed everyone and lay down... 2 hours later, wife runs in and says the stallion is in that guys place. We get up there and the guy and his wife are standing there with this stupid look on their faces and asking why our horse is so aggressive...

Fence was all pushed from his side to ours and his mare was in fullblown heat and squirting all over the place was all over the area with the stallion all foamy/sweaty pigging out on the bellyhigh grass. Put a bridle on him and was leading him to the gate when the mare came after me like a demon. I grabbed a broken fencepost and gave her an adjustment that settled her long enough for the guy to get ahold of her. Started thru the gate and she pulled out of his hands and came again. Got out of the way but twisted my knee in the process. Got out and she tried to come thru the fence. Wife took pics of some of it and the fence. Spent the rest of the morning and some of the afternoon fighting off a colic in the stallion and had the vet come check him out. Guy came to the house just before I left for work and asked what I was gonna do about his fence. Told him I'd take care of it and he'd be hearing from us next week. Went by on my way to work and his two mares was still there (we moved the stallion about a mile away). Untied his fence where it was fastened to mine and came to work. Wife called the police and we take pics and everything to a lawyer and drop off pics at the police station on tuesday and I go to the doctor about my knee. Gonna be pretty be a pretty expensive lesson for an idiot.....

Done now......

And then one wonders why people kill each other.

I'm glad i don't share a fence with no one.I got a road allowance on 3 sides and a river on the 4th.

That's the main thing that makes me homesick a little. OTH, wouldn't be doing there what we are here.....Too expensive and property taxes are too high, while horse prices are down.

(quoted from post at 13:05:18 06/11/11) hope your knee gets better soon.

Thing here called Schmerzensgeld (pain money), I'll do alright......may even be in the market for a new (to me) tractor........

I can't believe the guy asked you what YOU are gonna do about his fence!!!....

Some people... he is obviously an ignorant person concerning mares in heat and Stallions

hope your knee gets better soon.

Take care of the injuries. I would be in better shape and in less pain today. If I had went to the physician sooner and listened to more of what he said.

I guess the first thing taught to me as a kid was, never, never get between two mad animals- let them sort it out, whether it's bunnies or bulls. You are lucky to be concious. She could have stomped your skull, the stallion would stand there like a dummy. This will be an interesting read in a city courtroom, that's for sure.

I've owned horses for over 50 years and sat on my first one 64 years ago.
I will continue to have horses on my land until the day I die,... if my wife wants to sell them after I'm dead, that will be her decision.

With that handle, this must be the kind of horses you have.......

I am glad you where not seriously hurt. I am amazed that you can keep a stallion in with electric fence, anytime. I would not be able to sleep with horses out on electric fence. I never have had any livestock on an external electric fence. I usually used electric fence for internal dividing fences only. I have found good line fences are the only way for me to sleep nights.

That's my first thought.
I certinally don't consider myself an expert on horses, but I do know that before I got my horses, I built the proper fence to contain them. I talked to a lot of people and they advised to not use net wire, barbwire, or electric fencing. I erected a strong wood rail fence that was 5' high and I never had a problem.
It looks like the fence is one of the main problems in this situation.

No permanent/solid fences allowed in these areas. Part of the responsibility of having any animals or kids is making sure they are prepared to handle situations without making a fool of themselves. When he is breeding, we keep him seperated from the mares to be bred (our mares) with 2 bands of 3/4 inch tape. They stand 2 feet away with the band in between with no problems. This guy's mare only knows a stall and a small place with stock panels. 2 years ago, he rode her by the pasture while she was in heat and she went half way thru the fence with him on her back. All good now, just let the insurance company deal with him starting next week. Electric fences work fine is set up good. We have a couple of Einsteins that I have to stay a step ahead of, but the stallion and broodmares are good fencers.......

Nice website Dave. :D

I don't raise Leopard Appys, but I do like working with them and having them around.
Here is a pic of our 2 geldings and my daughter's Arabian/QH white mare.
I also have a couple of ponies broke for cart.

Very nice..... They look like big kids..... Did you teach the ponies yourself? I just bought a book and plan on teaching some of ours to work a little (pull a harrow on the pasture and in the roundpen) and maybe teach the big mutt to pull a cart.

I bought the ponies and cart in a package deal several years ago, and they were already broke to drive.

Yeah,.... the Appys ARE "like big kids". (but they don't mind working to earn their keep) :D :D

Horses or dawgs, we like 'em spotted on our place- although we have some fine Appaloosas without them.
Reddi-dog paased just this past year...he raised most of my girls.
