1650 gas that has me puzzled

I have a 1650 oliver that after you work it hard (discing etc.) for 1 to 1.5 hours it starts to spit and spudder and if you do not stop it will die. Prior to that it runs like a champ. But when this starts it is all over. I did notice that there is alot of condensation on the Throat of the carb? Anyone have an idea or had this happen to them?

It might have a bad/cracked coil. When it heats up, it will short out. Some times if you can run it in pitch, absolute dark you might be able to see arcing between the terminals on a bad coil. Wayne

Try replacing the condensor. They can go bad and only act up when hot. Had a customer once replace the carburetor only to still have the same problem. New condensor fixed it. Good luck

1 hour or so is the time it takes for a weak coil to start to short out and that in turn causes you to loose spark. Next time it does that check for a good spark that will jump a 1/4 gap and I'll almost bet you the spark will be weak. Oh by the way carry a new coil with you so when you find that it is bad you can install it right on the spot and keep working

My 1650 had the same problem when worked hard in warmer (75+ deg) weather. Turned out heat from the engine was boiling the gas in the tank/fuel line to boil which then starved the carb for fuel. Could tell by removing the gas cap and peering into the tank when it began losing power - it was like looking into a boiling teapot.

Solution was straight forward:

1 - Remove the side panels so hot fan blast is not caught under the hood

2 - Install a sheet metal shield between the engine and the fuel tank then stuff insulation on the topside of the shield.

3 - Wrap the fuel line between the sediment bulb and carb inlet with insulation.

Incidentally sweating of the carb exterior (and a buildup of frost on the carb in cooler weather) is perfectly normal.

I'd check the spark, as old recommends. If it's fine, then move to the carb, fuel system. Pull the line when the problem happens, and work through it scientifically. New alcohol gas causes many problems, from attracting water to swelling up neoprene needle valve tips.

Carb
problem most of the time will act up from the get go or about 5 minute from the get go. Coil on the other hand take an hour or so to mess up. Another way to check if it is the coil is when it acts up carefully garb the coil if it is so hot that it will burn you then you know it is the coil. As I said be very careful doing that
