Today I drove my 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee from Clarksville TN to Evansville IN to the tractor show. I pulled a 6 x 12 trailer with a golf cart and an anitque engine on it. I got 15.3 MPG going. On the way home my 15.3 dropped all the way to 11.8 MPG. Big drop and I don't understand why. 2 things did happen on the way home whenever I hit a hill the AC blower would switch from the dash to the defrost until I got over the hill. Next when I got home I smelled the smell of brakes. That smell turned out to be the AC clutch. Is there a vacuum leak that was affecting the problem with the blower output switching? I could hear the door close when it would switch back to blow out the dash. Thanks for your replies. The show at Evansville is a great show and I have attended for the past several years. Just was not able to stay a long time today because I am working a 6PM ot 6AM Friday night shift.

My 97 will only get 15mpg empty. The heater A/C system goes to default(defrost)if something breaks or at low vacuum conditions. There are a lot of reasons for the A/C to kick in and out, from a plugged condenser to low freon.

I'll sell you a mint condition 55k miles, 97 F150 V6 5 spd that gets 20 mpg on the road at 70 mph.

There is a vacuum check valve that keeps the HVAC from changing modes when engine vacuum is low like when climbing a hill. Could be the check valve is bad or there could possibly be a leak in the vacuum controls.
If the A/C compressor turns and does not feel rough when you turn it by hand, just replace the clutch, don't let somone talk you into a whole compressor.

There was another thread on this recently, though for another vehicle. General consensus at that time was a leak in a vacuum line. I had the problem in a Ford truck once.

Not sure if you can even get just the clutch at a parts store, The clutch on most jeeps are known to go bad, Replace that if you can find the part or maybe the entire compressor.

What others have said about vacuum is correct
