This has been a subject before, sometimes when I slow down ,the engine quits , other times it will act as if no fuel and chugs along trying rapidly to change gears ,local mechanics either dont know or don't know how to fix the problem The fuel cap has been replaced , If I release the pressure ? in the tank by loosing the cap it will restart until it decides to repeat the process , Could there be a sensor on the fuel supply which regulates the fuel supply according to load and speed ,BTW It changes gear (auto) hard with a real clunk (in any gear) seems maybe some correlation between hard gear changes and fuel requirement under normal driving conditions ,The timing chain broke on one occasion and I think caused by kick back from these hard gear changes.Does anyone have any similar problem with these models.?.

Trouble codes????

FIRST thing I'd suspect would be the throttle position sensor (TPS).

MAP sensor commonly fails, as well.

Is there pressure or vacuum in the tank? If a high vacuum, there's a problem in the charcoal cannister area.

the first thing i would do would be to pull the Idle Air Controll Valve off and clean the holes in it with some carb cleaner, if you don't know ehre this is just ask, this should help your idling and sould help with your off idle stumbe

those holes get carboned up not allowing air to pass through, and making the plunger stick, USALLY when you take it off it doesn't ruin the gasket, if it does just get the kid's ceral box and make another one.

If it's pulling a vacuum on the fuel tank, the vapor cannister or tubing is plugged. The fuel cap on a gas vehicle is not vented for vapor emissions control.

I second the throttle position sensor especially for the hard transmission shifts. My BIL had that happen on his 1995 where the transmission shifted real harsh and replacing the TPS corrected that. You can check it out with an Ohm meter and it is fairly easy to replace.

I also thought of the TPS/hard shift link, but I don;t believe the 'ol 85 has a 'puter-controlled tranny.
