I have a J.D. 3020 Gas. Cut hay last night..noticed oil on the right side in the step that you use to get up on the tractor. Appears to be coming out of the plate above the step that you would take off to view the timing marks..Dont remember oil seeping out of that before..any opinions..

Is it hydraulic or engine oil? The hydraulic is used for the transmission and engine oil would indicate a potential rear main seal leaking.

I would check with some other folks, but I think you can replace the rear main seal without splitting. We did it a couple of winters ago when the clutch was replaced. I do know the pan will have to come down.

Take the cover off of the bottom of the clutch housing and look to see where the oil is coming from. Could be engine or transmission oil. Rear main seal if engine oil or transmission input shaft seal if hydraulic oil.
Also David G is wrong on a JD 3020. The tractor will have to be split to fix either of the leaks.
