Bought a haybine...

NH 479 from the original owner. Needs 1 skid shoe, 1 rock gaurd and 2 sickle section knives. Was always shedded up until the last 2 years. Havent used a 479 before, think I will be happy with it. Paid $1000. Any advice on what to watch for wear or use of it?

Replace any badly worn sections on your "spare" knife. I hope yours has bolt on sections, they are much quicker to replace than riveted ones. I have done both.

Take your time on the first cutting to get to learn the machine. Are you cutting grass or alfalfa? Grass needs better sections and guards than alfalfa or other thicker stem forages to cut easily.

I "retired" my 479 this year, just keeping it as a backup unit for the Kuhn FC300 I bought.

Like Allan said, keep all WELL lubricated.

(Ford) New Holland has online parts manuals, as do most companies now. Most dealers are OK with looking up the parts you need when the time comes, but it goes a lot faster if you can just call in with the part number. DOUG
