Carb and Starter Problem

I have a question for you all -

I went to to try starting the tractor (my 135) today and the following happened:

The starter where the tab comes out of the starter and bolts to the solenoid started to spark wildly.

And the carburator seemed to be leaking gas from the gasket between the bowl and the upper part of the carburator, backing up into the air cleaner and out the drain plug.

The drain plug is a bit of a tough one - the screw in plug that Massey used on the TSX-882 no longer is available and while its a valid part number subs to a hydraulic cap screw to use instead. It"s leaking despite me making sure its tight.

I guess I"m curious what would cause the tractor to do this? I rebuilt the carburator last year and had the starter checked a few weeks ago.

Sounds like you need to clean up the copper bus bar where it attaches to the solenoid and install new nuts and a new lockwasher and snug 'er down.

Your carburetor is "running over"... some possible causes are ... debris in the needle and seat, worn needle and seat, or a mis-set, "heavy" or bent float

There is an insulator between the stud and the starter body, it is bad. A starter shop can fix it easily. Soldering the stud is a high heat quick job, not a insta fix.
The carb can be rethreaded if it is stripped but a single wrap of Teflon tape might just stop it from leaking. Remove the plug, put the tape one and 1/4 wraps onto the threads (clockwise if looking at the carb end of the plug, then re-tighten.
When tightening the stud on the starter, be gentle, twisting it in the frame is a likely cause of breaking the insulator. Jim
