the ditcher. It is 5' wide at the back 'points' and will go about 2 ft deep(if needed)it was a wheel-ditcher,I converted it to 3 point. Was unable to find a wheel ditcher in the neiborhood. Our water comes from snowmeit(mountain runoff),stored in reservoirs(Ridgeway Reservoir,Blue Mesa System(3 lakes),Taylor Reservoir,a few minor lakes) .We have no pumps, its all gravity flow.We grow just about any crop in this valley-hay(grass,alfala),corn,onions,pinto beans, small grains,a few speaciality crops.I grow hay, corn, and some small grain.

No pumps? Do you have all the water you can use or limited to X acre ft per year and how is it metered? Is the water supply private or state?

Gravity fed through a series of canals.Measured through a flume (of there are different types),each farm will have its own flume. Our water is'privatly' owned through a assn.(the Uncompagre Valley Water Users Assn.)Other areas will differ. We have just so many 'shares'.In our system,we have almost unlimited water,in other systems, they are "short"of water and have to be very dillegent in usage. In our system one share = 1 acre of ground.other systems :eek:ne share =xx acre ft.An 'assessment'(maintenance fee)is required annually. In our case-$40 per share.Water law is complicated.I have a nephew who is a 'water lawyer'

Our valley is at 5000 ft.Of our reservoirs,Taylor is the highest,at 10,000 ft.There a few minor 'ponds' higher than that.Gravity flow.

We had one on wheels, the depth hydraulically controlled, that we used on the rice farm in the 50s. IIRC, it was a Vemeer. We pulled it behind the JD "R"s as the "D" had no hydraulics. We plowed shallow ditches to aid in draining the fields.

Wayne, they dont take a lot of power.I use a 706,have pulled it mith theSuper M.A 'new'ditch will take2-3 passes for the best/smoothest job.For ,cleaning' an existing ditch, let it down and go-slow(1st gear, idle).your 3point will keep it at depth-with a minor 'adjustment'here and there.
