Discing vs. Mowing

Recently I had a nice little conversation with a local code enforcement officer who notified me they are strongly considering banning discing all together except for agricultural plots. Her reasoning was the massive complaints from local homeowners regarding the dust and more stringent air quality standards from local agencies. I politely told her that if such an idea went through that a large amount of insect species would breed more heavily in the weeds and that dust will still be kicked up nonetheless.
With that said what do you guys think? What do you prefer to do when merely controlling weeds and brush?

Yes I guess they think there food is magically produced in a lab or something.

I use a shredder. It's kicks up a lot of dust when it's dry. I don't
have enough acreage to justify a big enough tractor & disc to get
the job done.

its getting there guys we better get ready for it.I'm getting ready by quitting as fast as possible!.I can see a little of their point though, ive seen guys discing when it was so dry they just turned the soil to powder and it simply blew for the next month.not a good thing anytime.but ive also seen folks mowing that you couldnt see the tractor too.I hate rules as much as anyone ,but they are coming, better get used to it and start thinking about how we do things.epa and those folks are out of control, and to be quite honest they would like to shut down all farming, its bad for the environment in their estimation regardless of how its done.the sad fact is ,we'll have to see starving people on our street corners before they wake up and someone pulls their reins..

there are ways of doing this stuff without raising alot of dust ,but the problem is timing.mowing or controlling brush could be put off to a better time when conditions are more favorable for the most part, although you might start getting fined for Not having a place mowed also depending on where you were.farming, where you need the stuff done might be a different story.then your on sort of a time constraint.where it would be felt most would be on a guy who only had a limited amount of time between working a outside job ,family constraints etc.when the time and weather conditions were right you would simply have to drop every thing else and git whatever you could done however long it took.As for how I do it,I disc and mow both, depending one what i'm trying to do.but like I say I'm as fast as possible getting away from the farming end and going more to straight cattle.

Interesting topic. There are several towns here in Calif.around me where I do discing, or mowing. A few years back one of those towns said nothing but discing for fire protection. And now a few years later only mowing is permitted. I perfer mowing when I can do it is much easier than lugging my disc around. I believe discing will not be permitted at all in a few years. A lot depends on the tree hugger group. Stan

If you harrow around a house just before a brush fire is in the area, no one will say anything, they will want you to do around their place next, but when the wind kicks up your topsoil and gets the neighbors peed off, well, it is your topsoil that has blown away right? Creating your own little dust bowl doesn't do any of ya any good. You don't farm it? Or market garden? Hobby farm? you are trying to kill bugs? So the neighbors-and town, reckons you are makiing a mess playing with your tractor. If it is fit to graze, gets something to eat it, if not, wow. If you have to expose topsoil, and not re seed, for insect control... you need the cooperative extension or some sort of option...

Yes I guess they think there food is magically produced in a lab or something.

Unless you can eat WEEDS, there's no food involved in this discussion.

The problem with, "It's my land and I can do whatever I want with it," is that YOUR land is ending up on MY freshly washed truck! It's silting in through my screens and ending up on everything in my house.

If people could be trusted to be considerate about how and when they disked their land to keep the weeds down, then there would be no need to regulate.

Of course some jerkwad with the attitude that they can do whatever they want whenever they want, went ahead and disked their weeds at the worst possible time, covered all the neighbors in dust, and totally pi$$ed them off.

Okay give me a discing schedule that is typically utilized in your region that would be considerate to yourself and your truck.

So, you chose to live next to a farm, one that has most likely been there since the 1800's. You purchased your home with full knowledge that farming was being practiced on grounds around you, and now you want to bellyache because your freshly washed truck has some dust on it.

Move to the city and shut the hell up. No time for panty-waste pansies like you, we have real work to do.

But no, you'll meddle in the affairs of hard-working farmers, you'll petition and join groups favoring the the restriction of traditional farming practices, and you'll probably win and get your way. And then you'll start bellyachin about the cost of your food.

Just another fool you are, that's my opinion.
