my niece planted rubarb last year, didn't grow much, heard stories that it takes two years to grow, and you are to split it in half to make it grow more. have a 5x 15 little garden on my property. grew good t-mots, pepers, cuks. what should she do about rubarb?

Did she start it from seed?

i asked a similiar question a couple weeks ago. consensus was, not to split the rhubarb, but it does like fertilizer. composted cow manure works good. also, when the seed stalks sprout, twist them off near the base. i planted mine and didnt pick any until the third year.

my old uncle always split his ,but he always did it in winter as i recall.been a long time but I dont think he did anything until the third year.

i forgot about earlier thread on topic,--- rusty, yes just planted last year. will check to see what's happened so far, and tell about answers. thanks everyone, and for further replies...glennster, live out skirts of city, lot of b/s around here, but no real b/s to spread.lol

If you have a vigorous growing plant with a large, meaty root, split it into 2-3 pieces during the late winter or early spring. Replant the new pieces to other locations. Each piece should become a new plant. Growing and caring for rhubarb depends on the state and climate you"re in. In Michigan, I can grow it in full sun. In Georgia, the summer sun and heat will burn it up, so I grow it on the north side of the garage, mostly shady, and it does well. I plan to move some plants into the full sun and provide drip irrigation and see how it does. Cut the flower stalks down as they develop. Don"t let them flower, as this saps the plant"s energy and you"ll get little edible rhubarb.

Do you know which variety you have. The Wine Maker says there are three types. He and His Wife started 1100 plantw in a 50 inch grid. I built him a cult for his B that has the A wide front so he can keep the weeds down.

Considering it was started from seed just one year ago, you need to give it more time. Get a bag of 10-10-10 or similar lawn and garden fertilizer and apply liberally. It will be several years before you need to think about dividing it. If you were close, you could come by and dig up a clump that is already established.
