Hi guys,
What would be the best grass to plant in waterways in a field. The intention of the grass is to slow the run off on a hill of a field? This is in central Minnesota. Thanks for your help.

Youi need to go to your local extension for that answer they know whats the best for your area and where to get the seed.

...and you local soil conservationist may even be willing to do an on-site evaluation with you. That's their "game".

Best to call the local soil conservation office. We use fescue mixed with perennial ryegrass, but we are down near Ky. You are likely too far north for fescue. Maybe s.brome in combo w ryegrass. We always put a ladino or alsike clover in the mix at 1/2 lb/acre with ryegrass at 14 lb/acre. Also apply 15-15-15 fertilize at 500 lb /acre. Again should call local office for free advice, grass species suited to your area. Going into dry time of summer with a grass seeding is a risk. Mulch is a must for any waterway seeding also and might hold enough moisture to get the grass started.

Welter Seed has some good <a href="http://www.welterseed.com/productItems.aspx?id=13&org=0">waterway mixes</a>.

I've used their Mix 9 Pasture & Waterway Mix with good success, but you probably don't need the clovers in a field waterway. It sure makes a nice pasture though.

Reed's canary grass. That's what you see in most native areas, and it's outside the cattails.
