Forks for loader

Hi
I'm thinking of getting some of those bolt on forks for our bucket loader, it's a JD 46 loader mounted on a 2510 JD tractor. My purpose would be to stack logs for firewood. Any thoughts , comments or brands recommended?
Thanks Chris

You're not gonna be able to handle much weight that far in front of the tractor. I've got 2 of the old loaders (46A) on 4020s; I take the buckets off and mount home-made forks.....made from 4 inch pipe.....directly to the frame. They'll handle a 14 ft by 24 inch red oak log. Whatever you do, you MUST have 'uprights' (or something) on the back to keep from rolling logs onto the tractor and yourself.

I got a set of forks made for our loader by a local welder who I found on Craigslist. They pin on in place of the bucket, which keeps the load closer to the tractor. I have heard that it can be hard on the bucket using bolt on forks for heavy loads but I have never tried it.

I made a set of forks using 7 inch channel iron. They go under the bucket with a metal lip that goes over the lip of the bucket. Bolts only hold the forks in place. Use them to load fallen tree branches on the trailer to haul off.

(quoted from post at 01:29:09 06/01/11) you are better off having separate set of forks instead of bolt on bucket forks
hen dealing with logs it is really nice to have a grapple it is alot safer

Hard on bucket, just like using bolt on manure tines to move logs. Tears stuff up. JD forks come up all the time on Craigslist type classifieds.

Years ago I took a 3 point carry all frame and made it so it fit my bucket. Cost a whole lot less and all I had to do was beef up the to arms that made the forks. Forks for them in my area are around $200 but a carry all is around $50 so I did it the cheap way

Made some tongs using some 3X3 angle with a 3 inch flat stock welded to one side to make the angle double sided. Then made a thuub out of some scrap pipe that would retract down as the bucket was curled up.

Here is another picture of the thumb. Can't find the picture that had the tongs and thumb on at same time.

Thank you all for the reply"s and photos. You've made some great points. I appreciate them all, so I think I'll avoid the clamp on style.

Thanks Chris

My dad built a set for his loader tractor. After one summer of moving wood and junk with them the bucket on his loader (CIH 2255 iirc) has developed cracks and has required welding and bracing to make the bucket structurally sound again.
