more dealers and manufacturers should do this

well here is pretty neat idea that john deere dealerships are doing. i think they actually may have done this in the past. not sure though. but all summer they are setting up events that they call the drive green challenge wehre you can test out deere stuff along with competitors. i believe they also have so called "experts" there to help folks out. pretty neat idea but what equipment do you think all of these "experts" are gonna recommmend? i bet it has a little green in the color ;) here is the article that explains it probably a lot better than me http://blog.machinefinder.com/4495/john-deere-drive-green-challenge

Why not? They've proven that they're only there to sell new equipment, not to sell parts for the stuff that they've already sold.

The Cat dealers in our area have been doing something like this for years. During wheat harvest, they set up a big tent with flags and signs in someones field along a major highway. They bring a few combines for folks to drive and a couple of tractors with grain carts. As soon as a little harvesting is done, the big tractors get started with tillage equipment. Sprayers get to roam around too. Just a big demonstration of all their products, no competitors.
The CaseIH dealers won't even stock machinery to look at, let alone test drive anything.

Reminds me though of a story that Walt Buescher told about Allis Chalmers when they first came out with the AllCrop pull type combine. They had a big field day, brought in the media and representatives from all the other major manufacturers. Had an AllCrop in a wheat field for the great unveiling of the machine that was going to revolutionize harvesting. They started it up and plugged it. Did a bunch of adjusting, still wouldn't work. Spent the whole afternoon trying to make it work....nothing. The big wigs finally took the assembled farm equipment industry elite back to the rail road depot, apologized all over the place to them and sent them back home thinking the whole "combine" project was a huge dud. Meanwhile, back in the field, the guy in charge told them to get that piece of junk out of the field and get the good one in here and let's get this wheat cut.
All of those industry folks went home thinking the AllCrop didn't work and the engineering departments of all the other manufacturers slacked off. That little charade gave AC a better than 50% market share in pull type combines well up in to the 50s.

rr , I remember that story about the A-C All crop . It was a neat marketing trick . Thanks for telling it . clint

The Cat dealer here in No. Mankato,Mn. did that last year in my wheat field. They were going to combine the wheat but it got hailed off on June 28 so they just did tillage and sprayers and tractors. It was in my field but I didn't even attend as I will never need equip of that size. Some is so big and high tech that I don't even know what it is. I might just as well be looking at a space ship as look at that.

"That little charade gave AC a better than 50% market share in pull type combines well up in to the 50s."
Oh? A few All-crop 60's early, but soon Case sold dozens of A-6 combines. Couldn't get them in fast enough. Too bad that Wisconsin motor was so hard to start. My Dad left his idle all night once so he could combine before noon the next day!

Walt worked for AC from 1935 til 1975 and according to his book, yes, better than 50% of the market. It gave them a 5 year headstart too before anybody else had one that could begin to compare. I'm not a fan of AC spewing BS,just stating the facts as I've read them.

Try getting something for anything as new as a 40 or 50 series now. In the ads for used tractors in the trade papers now, dealers are calling them "classics". Want me to translate that for you? It means that pretty soon, parts will only be available for them through A&I,like some of them are for the 20 series already.

Local Massey fudd dealer has a program where you can try a tractor for 2-3 days at your farm. Not sure of the terms; don't like Massey fudd or the dealer!!!
