turn left turn left now how many time was I suppose to turn left 799 or 800 time I lost count.Or did he get buck fever?

Poor guy. It was his first Indy 500, and he was running good all day. Those corners were biting a lot of folks, though, even the experienced guys, so I can't fault him. Still, he came in second. That's a pretty darn good showing for his first time out.

I give the rookie a LOT of credit. A lot of other folks in his shoes would've stopped when they hit the wall, and finished about 15th or so...but he apparently stayed on the accelerator pedal and crossed the line second.

Us NASCAR fans are familiar with "the marbles" as you get higher on the track...apparently IndyCar folks need to learn this, too. Wasn't a particularly good day for cars sponsored by the National Guard and driven by folks with JR in their names, on the last lap of the race.

Too bad for him, made a mistake. The closing rate on overtaking those slow cars is hard to imagine until you study it. His spotters should have told him to slow down and follow them, but the guy behind him may have run him down and passed him when he slowed. Hard call to make in an instant. Until you stand behind the pits, you can't understand how fast they are really moving. Looks easy and slow on TV!

Two words can describe what happened

ROOKIE MISTAKE

He said he thought he could go UP HIGH and get around okay (versus gearing n slowing way down to get around otherwise), but that late in the race HIGH is known to be slick as glass. But hey Im still proud of him most others couldnt have done better so I wish him the best. Trouble is that race is so hard to win he may never get that chance of winning ever again.

Fun race to watch

I suspect his second place finish had more to do with his speed when he hit the wall (something north of 215 mph) than his ability to keep the power on. Keeping it pointed toward the finish line, though, had to require some skill since he only had two wheels in contact with the road.

Remember when the Indy 500 was THE big race of the year? Now it seems like a footnote- The only coverage in the Seattle Times was on the back page of the Sports section, about 3 column inches, no pics.

I'm trying to remember why that happened- Seems like the top drivers used to drive both Indy and NASCAR- but Indy made them choose, and they all chose to bolt to NASCAR. Am I "misremembering?"

If you really think that, then they should have started them back up a lap earlier and waved a yellow flag when the white flag was waved. They didn't. They could have given the race to JR, but they chose not to.

I lost all interest in Indy cars when they regulated them into nearly identical slot cars.

Prior to that, when one could run nearly anything that one could qualify, there was considerable innovation and the race was interesting.

The same thing happened to NASCAR and even most classes of drag racing.

And then NASCAR turned into a boring race where every car is a carbon copy of the next. Ain't even close to the same kinda racing that we had when Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Donnie Allison and A.J Foyt were running.

Words never spoken for truely!
Nascar did everything possible to give
JR the win except a 22 fuel cell...

I"d like to know how there WAS NOT a
caution flag thrown on that restart.

Yep- I kind of lost interest when the cars became so covered with decals that you couldn't tell 'em apart, or even tell with color they were. And after 20 laps, they're already lapping each other, so what looks like a fierce battle for the lead is not- because one of the cars has already been lapped.

I want to go back to the old dirt track races at the local fairgrounds when I was a kid- "And the 20 car- and Tom "The Bomb" Henderson!" Ole Tom couldn't hit 200 in the back stretch, but he could sure make it fun to watch!

I agree. Stopped watching Indy and Nascar. When all the cars became the same. Then they have so many restrictions on the cars. They all end up in a bunch. I sure miss the old days. I turned down tickets to the Nascar Race in Ft Worth. Didn't feel like making the drive to see the same car go around in a circle.

The Indy 500 was great back in the 60"s. Anyone remember the STP Turbin car in 1968. Blew everything off the track. Was doing 240 mph in the backstretch during time trials. Lost the race due to a $6.00 part in the tranny. Was pretty inovative for it"s time. Got to go there and see the time trials that year,..pretty cool. All the rear engine cars were loud and then this turbine car with just a "whooosh" when it went by.
