Wife went out and picked some of the sweet corn today, first we've gotten this year so far. Have quite a bit more, plus I planted another batch a few weeks ago.
We are planning on going over to my 88 year old Dads house Monday and cook for him and his lady friend as well as some of his neighbors.
The wife said the corn will be going in the smoker too, so I imaging we will be having a wonderful time on Memorial Day!
Here is the wife shucking some of the corn she picked, it's Peaches and Cream sweet corn. I sure hope it's as good as it looks!

And I put the smoker in my little baby trailer along with some wood. Since it's Memorial Day, I figured I might as well deck it out with a few flags too. It's only about 5 miles over to Dads place, so I guess I'll leave the flags in place and just drive slow. Mmmmm, I can't wait. Ribs, sausage, chicken, pork and sweet corn. I can already smell it!

Ray, My corn has yours beat by about 1/2 inch and the emergence wasn't worth a hoot. Of course it's right by the road too. Jim

Mine should swim to the surface this week. So, what's the tractor back there? My bet is a TO-30... nice tropical bush, aloe? yucca? Lyle can't grow those in Alberta. So how's things so close to old Mexico? We get all sorts of stories.... I like the area 'cause it is south of the twister belt, or is it??? Nice pics, thanks!

Just picked up some sweet corn from the market and it tastes more like grass than corn. Don't know where it was grown. We usually don't get good sweet corn until July in Michigan.

Nice looking sweet corn should really be good eating. I see I'm not the only one to reuse those cat litter buckets. Hal

Palm trees? That's the sweet corn! Ha.
See the flag under those palm trees? That is the Texas Flag, which happens to be where we are!

Tony you are correct, that is a TO30. You have a good eye.
The bush is yucca, actually it's a bunch of yucca. This spring it had 16 white plumes reaching toward the sky, absolutely gorgeous.
Things are fine close to Mexico. I'm sure the media gives everyone all kinds of wonderful stories. I just don't travel to Mexico, don't have a reason too anyway. Everyday somewhere along the area the police get into a chase. More times than not it's a truck or van full of illegal's. Usually at least half Mexican, but they get a lot from other countries. Then some of the chases involve drugs, those usually end up in the river and the driver swims back. Of course the drugs stay on this side when they retrieve the vehicle out of the water. It is amazing the dollar value of the pot and coke they seize. And then of course almost every day they catch them driving in with drugs. And now and then a Border Patrol agent is shot at from across the river, that is a fairly new twist. Thankfully we are far enough from the river we don't have any issues, and the closest north south road that heads toward the river is several miles west of us.
And yes we are south of the twister belt, unless we get one of those BIG twisters named hurricanes. At least with those we have several days notice, not minutes.

My first planting, 4 May is up about 1 1/2 inches with about 50% Germ rate It was just too cold. When it rained the rain was like ice water.
Second planting 11 May is up about 1 inch, with 80% germ.
Third planting 17 May is up just a tad and about 95% germ. I do six plantings, try for 10 day intervals, with 200 seeds at a time. The old pointed sovel handle and any 5-10 year old kid I can recruit to drop seeds.
Talking to neighbor who has planted S C for years and he swears by an 4-5 inch spacing up the row. I have been using 9. Anyone agree with him? I did four rows 25 feet long at 5 inches as a tes plot. WIll let you know how that works.

He said: so I guess I'll leave the flags in place and just drive slow.

The way those flags are standing out, I would say you are already doing about 30 MPH.

We barbeque corn in the husk or steam it for best taste. Most corn gets boiled in water so sugar is lost.10 minutes cooking is all you need.Pretty good raw too.
