I know we are having unsual dry weather. But we are having problems with these little black bugs crawing in the garage & carport. Look like they may live in the dirt. If you touch or move him, he rolls up in A round little ball.

Has any one else seen or have problems with these little bugs,or know the name for them.
How can we get rid of them?
I live in E. Tx.

Thanks

I think they are fairly harmless. Just vacuum them up.

There are several names for them; pillbugs, sowbugs, roly poly and wood lice, amoung others. They are a crustacean (shrimp, crabs, lobster, crayfish, etc.), and they breathe through gills. They are quite common in our area.

if your having dry weather they are probably hunting some moisture and cool.they wont hurt anything, rollies- pollies their called around here.spraying around your house will keep them out most of the time.if your one of the "power to the bug liberation front" members traditional way was to cut up horse apples and spread around your house. redneck way is to lay a piece of plywood down, wait overnight, gather all your kids around, pick up plywood and let them start stomping!if you do it right you can mow the grass at the same time,at least in a 4x8 area.LOL

We call 'em sowbugs.

Remember showing them to my kids when they were little- said "notice how they are perfectly round?" Kids looked at me like I had lost my mind. I touched one, and it went into ball mode. Everybody said, "Cool, dad!"

Ah, those were the days.

We don't stomp them- have never been able to see anything adverse about them, they are just "there". If they eat anything, its nothing that I want to compete with them for.

Diatomaceous Earth will get rid of them.

Diatomaceous earth is what is added to some swimming pool filters so can be cheap and inexpensive when purchased in quantity at Walmart, etc.

There is also food grade diatomaceous earth which can be added to stored grains for insect control.

Basically, as I understand it, the DE has sharp projections that pierce the bodies of the insects.
Diatomaceous earth for sow bugs.
