I know my cat is not a tractor, but here goes anyway. My cat is my computor budy he lays by me when I am on the computor. About one time each day he will start coughing, and gaging, like he is trying to hack up a hair ball, but nothing comes up. This goes on for about two minutes then everything is ok. Vet doesn't know what is causing the problem. My cat is about 14 years. He eats, and drinks fine. Anyone seen anything like this? Stan

Have you ever noticed if it may be when / while he may be cleaning himself, or shortly after maybe picking up a stray hair on his tongue, and agitating his Gag reflex.

If his eyes are clear and no fever or mucus. I'd think it to be something minor, maybe even got a hold of a bad tasting bug you didn't see.

My cat does the same thing as yours when I get on the computer I have to pull up a chair for him to. He is 16 years old and does the same as your cat he will start coughing, and gaging but no hair ball or anty thing else comes up.I get Treats for cats made by Whiskas that helps cure hair balls in cats.I think he just coughs now for the treats :)

Cats are better at training people that people are at training cats. Cats and women can both be a little feisty, but we love them any way.
Dogs have a master, but cats have a staff.
They say that we can't talk to the animals, but nobody said that they don't understand every thing that we say.

That's a very good age for your cat. Here's one of our cat's and one of neighbor's cat's that comes by for a meal. He's the Gray Russian Blue. Our's is the black and its surprising that both males get along so well. Hal
PS: I built that shelving for raising my garden plants. I had to keep the cats out of there when I was starting my plants since the black cat thought it was ok to tear up the plants.

we have a male cat about 13yo. he seems fine except he shows this synptom you described. our vet diagnosed it as asthma.

Just got home from taking our youngest cat, Quin, to get...ahem...a permanent attitude adjustment. Or as Pappy would've so eloquently said it, Quin will no longer be that most modern of mechanical marvels, the ball-bearing mousetrap, after today.

I'm not sure how to address your cat's problem. My biggest problem with housecats--aside from the one we're getting "repaired" today--is that my cats are either bulimic--I don't think Toby is, because he's around 25 pounds...but I'm not sure about the others--or they just can't keep the dry cat food down. I've tried he cheap stuff, I've tried the expensive stuff, "indoor formula," whatever...before the day is out, one or another of the four cats is going to heave their most recent meal.

I have three cats and all do the thing you are worried about. Hairball is what Mine have, am feeding hairball control food and a laxitive. It does get kind of scary when their chin is on the floor and they are wheezing and coffing away.

I had that problem. Cats gacking everywhere. Swithed to the Dads Gourmet Blend Natural cat food in the yellow bag and the problem is much much better. I was surprized as I considered Dads to be at the bottom of the quality list.

We have 3 cats, and used to have the bulemic problem. What we did is to reduce amount of food availble to them. We feed 2x per day, each cat has their own little bowl. I put in just enough to cover the bottom. Hardly ever have a food throwup. Less hairballs also.

Glad someone brought this up. Was at a tractor show in 'o9 and got a farm cat the kids were trying to get rid of. She's a calico and I love her. Never a day gos by with out a laugh. Any way I let her on the porch where she stays for a long time but will jump down and eat grass and sometimes puke. I thought this was ok maybe was needed in her diet. Then thought she can't do that in the winter.??? ALso how does she know when it's 5:55 in the morning to wake us up. The coffee pot and furnace come on at 6;00AM YELLOW

Differentiating between a cough vrs. regurgitation/ gagging in a cat can be difficult.

Coughing can sometimes sound like a "croup" with a seal like bark. In an older cat it is usually associated with tracheral or bronchiolar diseases like asthma. Does your cat seem short of breath afterwards?

Regurgitation/ gagging usually suggests an oral/ esophageal/ stomach problem. They usually gag and retch. Is stomach bile/ anything produced during the episode (hair strands- hairball)?

If these episodes are frequent have your cell phone ready and make a video of the episode for your veterinarian. Nothing beats seeing it in person or on video.

I'd say! Any time our cats started gagging I would give them a dose of worm medicine, most of the time thats it,but cats can develop digestive problems and eating grass and wretching is common behaviour associated with an upset stomach.
