O.T. Electric Brakes on a Trailer

I have dexter axels on a trailer and I put in new brakes, and they don't work. I put compleat new backplates and shoes and magnets. The old ones worked great but were worn down. The question that I have is the new backplates were painted and I didn,t grind off the paint to get a good ground and I was wondering if I needed a good ground there along with the grounding wire on the magnet. Thanks in advance.

Do they not work completely or just weak? if weak you may have them on the wrong sides, there is a right and left. The ground wire should provide the connection, have you checked your wiring with an ohmmeter?

The magnets on my trailers have 2 wires coming from them. You may already know, but they are lefthand and righthand on the back plates. I always wire my brakes to ground to the tow vehicle, not to the trailer it self.

Short answer, no. There is no electrical connection between the magnets and the backing plates.

There are two wires coming out of each magnet. One wire from each magnet goes to the source (brake controller) and the other wire from each magnet goes to a return/ground. Doesn't matter which is which.

Electric brakes should have a dedicated return wire to a ground terminal in the trailer connector rather than depending on the trailer frame as the ground.

You have to manualy adjust the brakes up to the drums to get them in the range that they operate in,then the adjusters should do it until they rust up.

Is the right hand and left hand the same as a car right and left? In other words as if one is in the driver seat.
