Water pump packing Farmll M

I am about to replace the water pump packing on my 39 M. Dose anyone have any suggestions or tricks that might help.

I am so danged forgetful, seems like we used to buy the stuff in a roll. It looked like small diameter rope. Black/dark gray in color. Just cut off what you needed, the fitted it in the channel.

But again, I can't remember exactly. I can probably dig around and find that old spool of packing though.

I have the packing. I was more interested in the process. Can I leave the old packing in and add the new? Do I need to remove the pump? I have not done it ever.

The packing should be the size needed, so the old packing should come out. Just out with the old, in with the new, and if it leaks, call me, and I'll commiserate with you.

They used to make "Packing hooks" for pulling
the old out. Hydraulic places,like "Baum"
or even "Snap-On still sell packing hooks, now
used to remove O-rings
