1962 John Deere 1010

I have been talking to a gentleman about a John Deere 1010 tractor.. needs some work ( valve job..engine work) but runs and is drivable.. Now I have gotten him down as low as $900 is this a good price for it? it has live PTO and is a gas 4cyl. no attachments or anything.. just the tractor. :?

It is very resonable. They have been going up in value as guys want the New Generation series to collect. What model/style is it? There where seven different JD 1010s made. The RS and U are the most common.

Run, run away unless you have excess time, $$$, knowhow and a well equiped shop.Or you are a collector and just want a 110,1010,2010,3010,4010 & a 5010 to line up at shows.

The only thing bad on the JD 1010 is the sleeve deck engine. The hydraulics have a PTO top mounted pump that works very well as it is the same as the JD 40/420/430 used.

The sleeve deck is available from JD again. it is $650 dollars. They went up to more than $900 and then where not available for a few years.

I have owned a JD 1010 RS since 1973. It gets used all of the time in the summer. Great for the garden and raking hay. Many of the guys on here that want a small piddle tractor should look at a JD 1010. They are a completely different deal than a JD 2010. The JD 2010 had the sleeve deck motor and a junk hydraulic system that almost never worked.

Tinyy is correct that some parts are not available new. Other than the sheet metal I have never had any trouble finding good used parts. If you are missing the side panels you could be in trouble. They get taken and are out raucously high priced.

The draw back of the JD 1010 is that they are not enough of them for too many after market parts. From the flywheel back they are real similar to the two cylinder Dubuque tractor. Many of the parts will inter change.

The really neat thing, from a collector stand point, is with seven different models. Plus different variations within the models. You can have a unique tractor for not a lot of money. The only sky high one I know of is a JD 1010 orchard. They will bring $20,000 plus. Less that twenty ever built.

Run do not walk away from it. The 1010 and 2010 where JD's problem childs and are hard to find parts for and had lots of pain in the back side problems. I know I have a part machine here and we did look at fixing it but it would have cost more to fix it then it cost to buy 5 other tractors that we could fix

one of the books I have says that a 1010 is a warmed over 430.A new engine/tin on a 430 tran/rearend.True?

The 1010 wasn't JD's best idea, mostly because of the sleeve deck. But they aren't bad tractors. OTH there is a lot of internet rumor about them that's based on funny expectations. A sleeve deck is about $650 now. A set of sleeves and pistons for most tractors will set you back that much anyway, so is that terrible for a low production tractor?

That is a very fair price.
I have owned a 1010RS for many years, it is a reliable chore tractor.
Mother Deere has parts for the 1010.
Later,
Doug

Or you just don't know how to take care of them. I have owned 1020s, 3010s, 3020s, 4010s and 4020s. The 10s and 20s are all fine if they have been maintained and you know what you are doing. If you just own a tractor and like to get on the web and pretend you are an afficionado then this is perfect for you. Also have a 2410 and my 3010 has blown it away on reliability over the years. Keep spewing ignorance hobbyist.

To have resurected this thread after three weeks. You must have more computer time than shop time. How do you manage to repair all those old tractors and drive them too?

Because I am retired. How difficult is that? Too far "outside the box" for you? And if you maintain your tractors you don't need to be in the shop that much. I spent my time in the fields. No money in the shop.

Besides, ignorance is timeless.

Being retired, you have ample time for ignorance.
