old diesel fuel

I have about 200 gals of diesel about 15/20 years old, I have just bought a diesel tractor and want to strain the fuel good before i use it, What is the best way/thing to strain the fuel? Dont want to mess up the tractor to start with.Neightbor has filled his tractor up twice with this fuel and have had no problems but i,m not takeing any chances. Thanks in advance. James

For that many gallons why not just buy a filter to go on the pump on your tank, like it should have anyway? If you have a filter already then your covered.

I agree with NCWayne - buy a good filter then run the fuel through it when filling your tractor.

Just be cautious when you get near the bottom of the tank. Good chance there is condensation - and possibly also algae, rust particles and other troublesome "stuff" - lurking there.

Suggest pumping the last 20 gallons or so into suitable container, then visually check it for contamination before sending it through your filter. If it looks bad, let it settle then decant and strain the good stuff. Then burn it in an oil burner, use it for washing parts, or similar.

If possible tip the front of the tank up a bit so sediment/ water goes to the back of the tank, away from pump pick up. also keep your pump pick up a few inches off the bottom of the tank. Really don't know how fuel that old is. What about algea ect?

New tractor, or good old gal?

The new ones can be pretty fussy on ultra filtered fuel.

The old ones are not so fussy.

As mentioned, a regular diesel fuel filter is the ticket, put it in line with the hose out of the tank. Older tractor you can get away with a courser filter, a new tractor you'd want the finer mesh rating.

Assuming that you have a pump going down in from the top, I would lower the pick up and pump without a filter into a clear plastic bucket until I got clear fuel. Then raise the pick-up an inch, put a filter on and go at it like it was delivered yesterday.
