the manual says replace all the tractor drives with "universal hydralic fluid" even the tranny and differential...seems odd... what kind of hydralic fluid are they talking about in todays fluids should i use gear oil?

I have a 1255 FWA and use the hydraulic fluid throughout. Anywhere from 15 to 30 weight depending on the tractor. Usually the gear oil is too heavy, being 80 or 90 and up to 140. I don't put a whole lot of hours on the 1255 but have been running it for 6 years now with the hydraulic oil and all is fine with it.
My 2 cents,
Cal

Don't use gear oil. On the 1365, the transmition, rear and hydraulics use the same reservoir. The book would call for Oliver/White type 55. I use the premium tractor fluid from Tractor Supply. If you look on the back of the bucket, it lists the different manufacturers specifications that it meets.

Now you do need to use gear oil in the final drives.
